I studied Kung Fu when I was in High School. I was quite devoted, training 4 times a week. I learned many skills and reached a competitive level, but when I entered University I gave it up because life became too busy. It's 25 years later now. I forgot almost everything! 😅 When I reflected on this, I realized the importance of staying in touch with a skill to prevent losing all your progress. Even though I didn't have time to practice 4 times a week, I should have done some sort of practice to at least maintain my level. Over 4 years of teaching English to over 5,000 students, I have noticed that just a short break from speaking English can cause one to lose progress. That is why being in an engaged and active English community is so important! Even if you take a class to improve your skills, if you don't have a plan to keep in touch with English afterward, you will unfortunately regress. I feel there is now a critical mass of innovations in foundational learning. The key issue is how to overcome scaling constraints such as teacher training, mentoring and support and developing credible assessments. It’s time we start embedding these in regular public school education practice.
