In two years' time, what skills might your future self wish you had invested in today to boost your adaptability? I'm troubled by how the chart below - which captures hirers' perspective - mashes up traits, drivers and competencies under the generic umbrella of 'skills'. But aside from this sloppiness, I'm even more troubled by the fact that: ↳ Change agility - which is much more than 'creative thinking' and encompasses curiosity, continuous learning, the courage to experiment and take risks, resilience and emotional regulation under pressure - is sorely missing ↳ Critical thinking is also a notable pass ↳ Social skills and empathy in the age of AI, anyone? ↳ Independent working ranks so high, when today's world in flux critically calls for joined-up thinking & cross-boundary collaboration ↳ And finally, given that this is hirers' perspective, I can only be amused by the fact that "passion" and "dedication" are listed there as if candidates are meant to just put those in the bag and bring them on their first day at work - and not at all a matter of employers creating the conditions for "passion" and "dedication" to be ignited and channeled in the right way 😬 Curious what else you're noticing in this chart; and how you see your own "skills of the future" evolving...

Are you seeing this as a problem in your workplace? Which of these 10 skills do you feel are most lacking? Great share by Margaret Heffernan, relating perfectly to our bread and butter at Effective Direction™ - helping organisations unleash their people!! Creative and analytical thinking (what we call Applied Critical Thinking - ACT) have been deemed the top essential skills in the World Economic Forum Future of Jobs reports in 2020 and 2023, forecasting the need out to 2027 and beyond. And yes, these skills are, unbelievably, also the most lacking. But is it unbelievable? Maybe not when you see the latest from Gallup, and the low workplace engagement scores we’re seeing across the globe 🌏 “Quiet quitting” is rife! Why is this happening? Because in a business world overwhelmed with processes and technology, we have forgotten what sits at the very heart of every organisation – its people. This is why we train organisations and individuals in Applied Critical Thinking 🧠🤔 Simple, not easy. But essential. What would you prioritise as the essential training you or your organisation need⁉️ #management #people #criticalthinking #learninganddevelopment #humanresources

How do we teach skills we don’t have? The short answer is we don’t. None of these skills are even part of the curriculum. Teaching is force-feeding information that doesn’t matter to students who aren’t listening. Who can blame them? There is no future for this. Facilitated learning (think Finland) incorporates all these skills seamlessly. It is the opposite of teaching. Teaching doesn’t work. As long as it takes for that to sink in is as long as it’s going to be before it’s eradicated.

TRUE - - - It is time, isn't it? TIP: our only point of 'control' is the present. 🕒 If we wait for 'someone else' to take a stand or push back against dishonorable behavior, nothing will change. Over nearly a decade, I've witnessed and experienced what I define as 'Systemic Avoidance of Duty' (SAD) within Management, HR, and Unions. 😔 The truly SAD aspect is that those who perpetuate this toxicity may not realize how much better their work and career experiences could be. It often functions as a trauma response. We should expect and demand more from those entrusted with 'The Public Trust,' especially when they violate that trust. ⚖️ It has to stop. The data supports this. There's no cost savings or financial benefit to maintaining a toxic environment—it merely reinforces undiagnosed narcissism or sociopathy among those in power, who pretend to be 'doing their job' when they are not. 🚫 Transforming toxic operations into healthy environments is always a win:win. The problem is, those guilty are afraid of being exposed. From a POTU perspective, demanding punitive measures only perpetuates 'Structural Violence'. We need to make it safe for change to happen. The problem with SAD is that it's all about using 'force' and abusing 'power', rather than stewarding power to create a non-toxic environment. 💪 When refusal to end toxicity persists, external oversight and litigation become necessary for positive change, which should be unnecessary among fair-minded and reasonable people. If policy and justice fail, depending on the severity of the harm caused, human beings eventually rebel when they lose faith in the systems supposedly preventing SAD. 🔥 We enjoy fictions like 'The Punisher' and 'The Equalizer' because they address unchecked corruption that leads to toxic, and eventually criminal, activities. Such corruption evolves when we fail to challenge SAD in our lives, work, and careers. Being a business owner, for example, does not grant the right to be abusive. 👊 We have a lot of work to do. It begins by each of us taking personal responsibility to expose, challenge, and say 'no' to SAD when it shows up. It also involves documenting events in support of those targeted and being an honorable 'witness' to those who dare to stand against it. 🛡️ Too many people are waiting for 'someone else' to act, while merely complaining. That does not work. 💬 - POTU David 💖 Love/Like, 🔁 Repost/Share, 💬 Comment with your thoughts, share. Our world needs to learn how to live the principles it already knows. #potudavid #howtothinkpotu #management #HR #unions #sadmanagement #sadhr #sadunions

😎 First, I just think it's incredibly cool seeing Snoop Dogg in my LinkedIn feed 🤙 📷 Many have said that seeing Martha Stewart and Snoop Dogg together, at the Olympics, is surprising, but to me, it makes perfect sense. While they may seem like an unlikely pair to some, their friendship and collaboration reveal deeper commonalities that I think many people overlook. 💥 Both Martha and Snoop are self-made founders/entrepreneurs who have built their brands from the ground up. Martha👩🍳 transformed her passion for cooking and homemaking into a media empire – in fact she’s about to publish cookbook number 100! Snoop💿 turned his music career into a diverse business portfolio. Their stories about both success and failure demonstrate resilience, creativity, and the ability to reinvent themselves, key traits for any successful entrepreneur. 🦄 The Martha and Snoop friendship shows us that successful entrepreneurs often think outside the box and see potential where others might not. They embrace collaboration, innovation, and the breaking down of traditional boundaries. It's not about fitting into a mold; it's about creating your own path and finding synergy in unexpected places. 🙌 So, next time you think you see an unlikely pairing, consider the hidden similarities that might drive their success. Entrepreneurs like Martha and Snoop demonstrate that with the right mindset, diverse backgrounds and skill sets can come together to create something amazing. #venturecapital #innovation #startups #creativity #digitalmarketing Portola Valley Partners
