How to squeeze all the juice out of your research. Avoid the trap of confounding observations and insights. We all look forward to it. The research is done, and we are coming together to review the results. It’s a lively session, and people enthusiastically start to interpret what they are seeing. If we let this happen, it’s likely the team have not uncovered real insights because the ‘answers’ they found still reflect their prior knowledge and biases. To lead your team to deeper insights 💡 , set up separate working sessions. 1️⃣ Focus on pure observations without prejudice. Write down what customers say, not what you think they meant. Capture facial expressions and emotions objectively. Allow time for reflection. Don’t move on to the next session until after a break, or the next day. 2️⃣ Stir up discussion by asking “what did we learn” or “what surprised you” or “how are these customers different to us”. Ask the team to look for information that is new, things they didn’t know before. Bring DISCIPLINE into recording observations. This helps our teams to more deeply understand our customers who are generally NOT like us. Bring structured CURIOSITY into synthesising insights.
