Articulated Tug Barges (ATB’s) are a specialized vessel configuration used for transporting cargo. The “unit” typically consists of a high horsepower vessel and a barge with a stern notch. The tug is connected to the barge with a hinged coupler system that enables the tug to pitch fore and aft independently while being connected on a fixed horizonal axis. This gives the unit increased maneuverability and efficiency.   The U.S. Articulated Tug fleet currently consists of 152 vessels with an average age of 20.4 years. The majority of the fleet (85.4%) is dedicated to moving clean / dirty petroleum products and 70.4% operates along Gulf Coast and East Coast ports. The average horsepower of these vessels is 6,385, with 61.8% over 5,000 horsepower. 40.7% of vessels are powered by EMD engines.
