So much good stuff in this column by Steve Bass in Current: News for Public Media, including this: "In some ways, public media is becoming more like its early days: an ecosystem of locally focused organizations serving communities with journalism, civic information, cultural expression and educational content. The conception of public media as a network of stations focused on distributing a homogenous nationalized linear broadcast service isn’t as powerful — or as sustainable. We don’t have much time to make this transition. Media habits are shifting quickly." I would take it step farther and argue that public media must move beyond just content creation and start creating spaces where people can connect. But that idea is in line with so much in this column. This column adds a ton of value to the conversation -- if you work in public media, I highly recommend reading it: https://lnkd.in/gj--DnmZ #publicmedia #broadcasting

Today I celebrate 18 years in broadcasting Looking back, this might have never happened because a month into my first radio job, I was almost let go due to budget constraints. I want to share some of the insecurities I had and the mentors / leaders who showed me how to navigate and pivot within this challenging industry. 2006 - Shortly after I was told I was to be let go, a colleague spoke up for me to my then boss and justified the work I was doing. I was given a chance to stay for a few more months and this colleague took me under her wing and groomed me. 2 months later I was offered a full time contract. Never easy taking a chance on someone. 2007 - I was taken off air because I was deemed "unable to read the news well". Perhaps I became complacent (and I was young and stupid) but I dug deep, practiced and spent months "begging" for another chance. Once I was given that chance, I was never deemed unfit for broadcast ever again. This Program Director has since passed on but he made sure I knew he respected my grit and determination to succeed and even when I left the company, he always kept in touch and offered advice to sound better on air. 2014 - Out of pop-radio and into sports TV, I was so unsure of myself before my first sports TV broadcast. My then EP (a person till today I consider my greatest mentor in broadcast) consistently put faith in me. He gave the occasional feedback of course but always trusted me to take my skills to the next level, all he did was push me in the right direction each time. That sort of faith and trust is so hard to come by. 2017 - I decided it was time for another pivot. I helped to build Money FM 89.3 and I remember how worried I was that I might sound like a fraud on air talking business and finance. My executive editor (who was training me) said to me, "you will make a good financial presenter one day. Just keep working hard and asking the right questions". 7 years on I've established myself as a top business and finance anchor for radio 2021- There was a period where I questioned my purpose in broadcast, was my worth just the ability to go on air. Thankfully my Music Director spoke with me and taught me data analytics and how to use that data for better broadcast programming. Through that I found new purpose in building a craft around telling the right story in the most effective way. Of course I've had many friends and colleagues who have also been there for me through my ups and downs of my broadcast career. But today I want to celebrate mentors and true leaders. A week doesn't go by without another layoff announcement in public media. The reasons are always inherently local -- but there are broad themes that play out in all of them: * The ever-shrinking traditional public broadcasting audiences * A glut of digital content from all sorts of non-traditional creators * Overly ambitious growth plans triggered by the Trump Bump. In my latest column for Editor & Publisher (E&P) Magazine, I try to remind folks that cuts, however necessary, aren't a strategy -- and that years of hard work are ahead of us if we're to reinvent #publicmedia. https://lnkd.in/eAWtpMat
