Is this a good news-bad news moment for women's sports? One can bet to their hearts content on sports from boxing to pickleball and soccer to curling. Does this mean women's sports has arrived? Will it subject female athletes to the pressures of corruption that seemingly go hand-and-hand with gambling? Time will certainly tell. "Bettors have gravitated towards numerous women’s sports leagues such as women’s tennis and women’s soccer—the 2023 Women’s World Cup being a huge focus on the sportsbook—but one league stood out last year. The WNBA was the most bet women’s sports league by both bet and handle in 2023, with women’s college basketball not far behind, ranking third." #womenssports #sportsbetting #gambling #womenscollegebasketball #womenstennis #womensworldcup https://lnkd.in/dzwCf3aw

Spoiler alert: the Olympics have been great. This has become a rare event at which you can quickly become emotionally involved in all the teams and athletes, thanks to the combination of all the broadcast coverage (God bless the Gold Zone), social media content from the athletes and other correspondents, and the condensed schedule. It’s truly the Olympics of storytelling. Former NBA forward Chase Budinger wins his first beach volleyball match. US rugby player Ilona Maher has become one of the biggest stars of the Games thanks to her highlight plays ... and TikTok headlines. Simone Biles is looking for redemption, competing on one leg. And let’s talk about the Clark Kent of the pommel horse. The self-proclaimed "nerd" Stephen Nedoroscik waited the whole evening to compete in his one event: pommel horse. He was the last competitor for Team USA. Medal hopes were riding on his upper body, and he delivered. Imagine the pressure? Fears, tears, and cheers for two more weeks. 𝘼𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙨, 𝙄 𝙝𝙤𝙥𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙩𝙤𝙬𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙨 𝙣𝙚𝙬 𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙖𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙣𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙪𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙨. 👇 A few Olympic-sized #Nickknacks. 👀The average viewership of 34.5 million over the first three days is up 79 percent (from 19.3 million viewers) over the same period as the last Summer Olympics in Tokyo three years ago. 🥇The aforementioned Gold Zone is the big winner for NBC. Gold Zone is an Olympics-specific program that airs every day from 7 a.m. ET to 5 p.m. ET. The concept is simple, especially if you've ever watched the NFL RedZone. The broadcast rotates to show as many events as possible, focusing on the most interesting or important ones. It’s a great way to see all the different sports, and it's perfect for someone like me who has trouble focusing on one event for long periods. 🤸The men’s gymnastics team's success was a good reminder that pairing generalists and specialists can work in sports and business. While Nedorosicik was waiting hours to compete in his specialty, a unique strategy for Team USA, his four teammates rotated in the other five events, successfully earning a bronze medal—the first since 2008.

This article beautifully captures why athletes play the game. Every time an athlete takes to the field or pool, they risk the prospect of losing. In this moment, much is learned as it encapsultes this is a chosen endeavor; one which leads the athlete to understand “it will hurt exactly as much as it is worth.” Personal betterment comes from what we learn in these moments of defeat. As uncomfortable as it can be, losing teaches personal growth and the resolve to get up and do it even better again.
The 2024 Summer Olympic Games produced an exorbitant number of one category of athlete: losers. All told, Paris sent home nearly 10,000 losers. Sports are a uniquely unforgiving institution. It’s all designed so a large majority of participants lose their final competition and many more along the way. From youth sports leagues through amateur and professional ranks, there’s only one ultimate winner: everyone else finishes their season with a loss—and some fail to even qualify—and many athletes lose more than they win throughout a season. Ready legendary goalie, Jack Bowen's perspective on loss. https://lnkd.in/giAjeKsj #waterpolo #olympics #sports #losing
