Just wanted to leave a comment commending all of the efforts of The 93% Club. I've been looking for an organisation to champion social mobility and recognise the class gap for years. Growing up as a mixed raced person in one of the worst boroughs in London for knife crime, (in a school with a 27% GCSE pass rate) with strong working class roots, whilst also being the 1st of my family to go to university, I've always felt I was an outsider, classless even. Not posh or connected enough for one group, and a 'nerd' to the other. No one, but for a few good friends, saw me for ME. Or when I was accepted I was met with exceptions and caveats. It's not everyone's job to like you, and seeking familiarity in your peer group is a necessary part of being human. In a work and educational setting, however, we need to create an ecosystem where all intersectionalities, especially class and socio-economic, are considered. Class and socio-economic factors are often overlooked under the umbrella of DEI but are prevalent enough to command their own attention. From an economic standpoint, there has never been a greater need for giving (less giving and more getting out of the way of) people from underprivileged backgrounds a seat at the table. The untapped potential is an immeasurable waste! No call to action, just a point worth making.

8 years ago, Maryanne Sanyaolu MARLA, ACIPD and I chatted about our future aspirations... We now run our own businesses 😊. This was Maryanne and I at a recruitment fair 8 years ago when we worked in an agency - my first agency role after moving from internal recruitment. And one of my first LinkedIn posts! We were always talking about our ideas, plans and dreams for the future whilst sitting at our desks making sales calls 💭. We met up on Friday for the first time in a while, reminisced as you do, and talked about how far we'd come🥂. It was so good to share our business journeys, stories, challenges, and successes.. Super proud of us and love the fact we both said being able to treat our parents and loved ones and spend more time with them was one of the biggest achievements we both felt. Why it’s important to build proper communication with recruiters and how to do it The Nerdsbay Fair has come to an end, but that doesn’t mean opportunities to connect with companies have ended as well! We know many people weren’t approved for 1:1 meetings with recruiters during the fair, but don’t let that discourage you. The fair is just one of many ways to establish communication. Feel free to keep reaching out! ⚡️ Be sure to add speakers on LinkedIn — it’s an additional way to connect and a great opportunity to remind them of your interest. Mention that you understand time was limited at the fair and that you’d love to schedule a one-on-one meeting to get acquainted. Suggest a convenient time for a call. If a recruiter is open to talking, you can discuss potential collaboration opportunities. Even if there isn’t an immediate fit, your contact might be referred to another recruiter because you’ve shown a polite and friendly approach. Last week, we hosted a highly informative session with Ludmila Lumi Tomperi Tomperi, a recruiter with 10 years of experience in fast-growing Finnish companies. Sending a resume; 2. Scheduling a first interview (replying to an invitation); 3. Sending a technical test; 4. Thanking the recruiter after each stage and asking any follow-up questions; 5. Checking in on your application status (this step may not be necessary or might involve multiple follow-ups after each stage). ⚡️ In all correspondence with recruiters, remember that you’re communicating with a real person, not a bot. While AI is increasingly used, it’s not yet handling candidate interactions. Show respect and friendliness. Automated messages are easy to spot and can sometimes hinder your application, so we recommend carefully reviewing them before sending. Avoid too formal tone — aim for engaging and personable cover letters. Don’t ignore messages, even if they don’t seem to need a reply. Each interaction is a chance to showcase your soft skills and enthusiasm.
