Today, many children are blissfully unaware of the journey their food takes from seed to plate. Let's take a moment to express gratitude for those of us who had the privilege of tending to a garden or growing up around farms. It's about more than just playing in the dirt; it's the magic of planting a seed and witnessing it blossom into the nourishing fruits and vegetables we enjoy. Imagine a world where more schools embrace the beauty of farm visits, providing a firsthand experience for those who haven't had the chance to witness the wonders of agriculture. Witnessing the awe and creativity sparked in children's minds when they see the transformation of plants into sustenance is truly remarkable. If I had the opportunity of one wish in life, it would be to invest in large farms and create a learning center—a haven for schools, colleges, detention centers, troubled teens, special needs children, Boy and Girls clubs, and any place eager to delve into a way of life often left unexplored. The goal: to share, teach, and work with kids and teenagers, offering them a taste of a life they might never have known. Our agricultural and produce industry often forgets the blessings we live each day. This message isn't just a reflection; it's a call to action. Imagine the impact we could make if we shared the joy and excitement we feel every day. Today, I share these thoughts in the hope of igniting a spark in your hearts to effect change in the lives of future generations. Bittersweet to read about parents having to cut back to fund school trips. While we know just how transformative trip-based learning can be—making learning fun, bringing topics to life, fostering teamwork and building confidence—we deeply empathise with families facing these tough choices. At Ufton Court, we believe every child deserves the freedom to flourish outside the classroom, no matter their circumstances. That’s why, through our charity, we subsidise history and outdoor learning trips to Ufton Court by 50% for schools in areas of deprivation. Day 11 of a #sharednarrative for #Plymouth: This can all feel overwhelming, even hopeless. How can we hold hope together? Overwhelmed. Disempowered. Scared. Angered. Denial. All these reactions can come up when facing such intense, unpredictable problems and violence with a perceived lack of tested solutions or necessary effort to try them – and are a part of why we have not managed to course-correct quickly and effectively enough.
