BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND Not everything old is “old”. It’s been almost 35 years since Stephen R Covey published “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”. I his book (yes, those paper things) Covey says to imagine you are at your funeral and think about what you would want said at your funeral and how you will be remembered. Taking a more pragmatic approach, “beginning with the end in mind”, can be as simple as considering before you walk in the door of your office, or switch on your laptop, asking yourself what do I want to achieve by the time I finish today? How many times have you left a meeting wondering whether anything was achieved? Before you walk in, know what you want to walk out with. Have you ever just randomly walked out your front door at home and wandered off? I don’t think so. You have a destination, a purpose when you walk out the door – to catch up with friends, do the shopping, visit a loved one…have destinations in your life, “begin with the end in mind”; and know where you want to be. You may not always get there, but you’ll have purpose along the

This past week I attended a conference in a nice hotel in New Orleans. Upon arrival, I checked in, went to the elevator bay, and pushed the button. When the doors opened and I entered, there were no buttons inside to select the desired floor. I thought maybe I’d mistakenly entered the parking garage elevator and stepped back out. I could tell, however, that it was the correct elevator but there seemed to be no way to get to my floor. For what seemed like an eternity, I went in and out of the elevator trying to figure out what I was missing. For as long as I can remember, I’ve not liked asking for help. I’m always afraid that the solution will be something obvious that I should have figured out. I suppose I’m worried people will think I’m stupid. In this case, however, I’m sure I already looked pretty silly going in and out of the elevator, so I caved, and asked somebody. I was shown that, by pressing the room key-card against the elevator button it activated a digital touch screen on which the floor could be selected. Then, you simply step inside and it takes you where you want to go. Unfortunately, there have been many times I my life where my hesitancy to ask for help has kept me from progressing. Conversely, I honestly can’t think of a time when I had significant regret about asking for assistance (including times when the answer was, indeed, something obvious I probably should have thought of). Take a minute today to think about who you could ask for help with a problem you’re facing. In my experience, it’s likely you’ll progress much quicker than if you keep trying to battle it yourself. Happy Friday! #askforhelp #effectiveness #humility #storytellingforbusiness
