Dear young person... Volunteering can either level up your career—or lead you nowhere. We’ve all been told that volunteering is a great way to build your portfolio or CV, but here’s the truth: if you’re not intentional about it, it can end up doing very little for your career. Many people dive into volunteering opportunities just for the sake of having something to add to their CV. The result? A collection of experiences that may not align with their long-term goals. If you're looking to gain experience by volunteering, here’s how to approach it strategically: 📍Don’t say “yes” to every opportunity. Ask yourself, “Does this align with the skills I want to develop or the field I want to work in?” Choose opportunities that push you in the right direction. 📍Look for roles where you can gain new skills, take on leadership responsibilities, or make a meaningful impact. That’s where real value lies. 📍Make sure your volunteer work supports the career or personal goals you’ve set. It’s about quality, not quantity. The right experience can open doors, while unrelated roles might just fill space on your CV. Volunteering is powerful when done with purpose. If you want it to truly enhance your career, be strategic about the opportunities you take on. Have you found volunteering useful in your career?
