“What’s in a name?” This famously coined line has been asked throughout history, and today we see it aptly applied to the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL)’s Boston team rollout. BOS Nation. Yesterday, the NWSL’s newest franchise unveiled its brand, and the campaign was met with much backlash for focusing mainly on the presence of male sports/bodies (keeping it PG for LinkedIn). The ad was deemed tone-deaf and trans-phobic widely across the NWSL ecosystem. The Rollout: The Bos Nation brand proudly boasts a ‘sarcastic, championship banner-raising’ personality, with a promise to be a reflection of ‘the many stories, cultures, and passions that make up (Boston)’. However, the rollout failed to meet the promise set forth. In a league where intersectionality is the base on which community and fandom are built, they failed to acknowledge those same stories and cultures the team promised to reflect. Their story did not provide a vehicle that future supporters and Bostonians could “buy in” on their road to fandom. I do not believe the choice to hyperfocus on the dominance of one sex in the Boston sports landscape is a reflection of leadership’s feelings. I’m left hopeful by their swift action to begin removing the offensive ad and releasing a statement apologizing and acknowledging their missteps. Lessons Learned: A brand is only as strong as its story and you only have one chance to make a good first impression! Changemakers. Founders Niamh & Mohammed were invited to the Houses of the Oireachtas after Her Sport's submission to the Oireachtas Committee formulated part of a number of recommendations which have been developed around inclusivity and participation in sport, at all levels. 𝟭 𝗶𝗻 𝟱 girls will have 𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝘁 of sport between primary and post- primary school - this compared to 1 in 20 boys. It's not good enough and more needs to be done. We're happy to be able to contribute to changing the future and we're hopeful that this 𝗶𝘀 a small step in the right direction. Now we ask that the key decision-makers commit to a future where EVERYONE has the same opportunity in sport. Actions speak louder than words.

No concept of inclusion allows for insulting others! Inclusion is about embracing diversity, respecting different cultures, and fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and respected. The Olympics are a symbol of global unity and peace, bringing together athletes from all corners of the world to compete in a spirit of mutual respect and camaraderie. THEY ARE NOT A PLATFORM FOR ONE NATION’s AGENDA or for demeaning others. Tony Estanguet, these Olympic Games are NOT French games—they belong to the international community. The real fault lies with the International Olympic Committee for permitting such a disgraceful insult to the very essence of the Olympics. The Games should embody the highest ideals of human achievement and international cooperation. Freedom of speech does not mean the right to demean and mock others. It is essential that the principles of inclusion and respect are upheld to honor the true spirit of the Olympic Games.

🥇Meritocracy vs Mediocrity🥉 As the world comes together to celebrate the Olympic Games, we are reminded of the essence of human achievement, excellence and the relentless pursuit of greatness. The Olympic Games are not merely a showcase of athletic prowess; they embody the spirit of meritocracy – a system where individuals are rewarded based on their abilities, effort and achievements. However, in recent years, there has been a growing trend in schools and communities to de-emphasise competition, with some advocating for participation trophies and awards for everyone, regardless of performance. This shift raises important questions about the impact of such practices on individuals and society as a whole. In this blog post I talk about the negative impact of downplaying competition and address common objections from those who are too uncomfortable to disappoint their children. Something is very wrong with the structures that ‘support’ women and girls football. Below the Women’s Super League it is a struggle for clubs to resource girls and women who play. Either they are prioritising men’s and boys football, or the restrictions put in place by the footballing authorities who govern the development of the women’s game make it too difficult for clubs to support females who play. Until we value women footballers and women’s football culture for its own hard-won values and characteristics, we will continue to see these news stories. More generally, how can women’s football survive if it is constantly judged by, compared to, and devalued by those whose standard is the men’s game? If you see the women’s game for what it is, there is a huge missed opportunity about to happen.

Creating outdoor games like running and tug-of-war for our youth groups provides more than just physical fitness benefits. These activities help develop resilience, leadership, and teamwork skills, allowing young people to set and achieve goals, contributing to a stronger sense of purpose and direction in life. Research shows that structured physical activities for youth groups foster social, emotional, and cognitive growth while helping to keep youth away from antisocial behaviours and vices.✨ At Touch of Love❤️, our structured outdoor games offer a positive outlet for energy and creativity. They provide a safe environment where young people are less likely to engage in risky behaviours, such as delinquency, and instead, build self-esteem. +++WHAT GRASSROOTS SPORT SHOULD BE ALL ABOUT+++ I have the privilege of coaching the Swinton Wolves U9 football team. This season I've witness, so-called, coaches and parents being aggressive and abusive towards their own teams, us and the referees. We need to remember what children's sport is all about. 🏆 As a proud member of the Swinton Wolves U9s football team, I’ve experienced firsthand how this incredible journey shapes young hearts and minds. Here’s why playing for our team goes beyond the game: Teamwork: 🤝On the pitch, we learn that success isn’t just about individual brilliance—it’s about working together seamlessly. Passing, communicating, and celebrating victories as a united squad—these moments forge lifelong bonds. Resilience: 💪Football teaches us to bounce back after setbacks—whether it’s a missed goal or a tough defeat. We learn that setbacks are stepping stones to improvement, and every match is a chance to grow. Discipline: ⚽Early morning practices, drills, and commitment—these build discipline and a strong work ethic. We carry these values beyond the field, into our studies and daily lives. Fair Play: ⚖️Respect for opponents, referees, and rules—Swinton Wolves U9s play with integrity. We celebrate wins but also learn from losses, always striving for fair competition. We actually won the fair play award at a recent tournament. Friendship: 👫The camaraderie in our team is priceless. We celebrate birthdays, share secrets, and cheer each other on. These friendships extend beyond the pitch, creating a supportive network. Leadership: 🌟Captains inspire, motivate, and lead by example. Whether it’s encouraging a teammate or rallying during a tough match, we all learn to be leaders. Joy of Movement: 🏃♂️Running, dribbling, scoring—the sheer joy of movement fuels our passion. Swinton Wolves U9s remind us that play is essential for a happy, healthy life. Yes winning is fun and something to aim for, but we need to keep a perspective on this. We are so lucky to be supported by Opogo who sponsor us with kit and equipment. We also have brilliant parents who support their child, the rest of the team and the coaches. Why can't we all just be like this!?
