"If you haven’t heard, ghost tours are in. Haunted attractions generate an estimated $300 million dollars annually, and unsurprisingly, fall is their boom time. Haunted tours have a reputation for being a little wacky, and ghost-oriented shows like “Long Island Medium” or “Ghost Hunters” have done little to change this perception. However, some ghost tours across the country can provide more than an eerie walk through an old building. "While some might focus on proving the presence of spirits, a significant number of these tours combine the heebie-jeebies of good old-fashioned ghost stories with accurate histories of local places and people. They’re a way to talk about true stories of wrongful deaths or people confined to asylums, and to visit places we might otherwise turn away from, like abandoned buildings, battlefields and penitentiaries. It is hard not to see the similarities in the efforts that touristic destinations cities try to make (no matter how unpopular they may be) to avoid or diminish the "side effects" of certain styles, whether they are related to tourists, festivities, or the unofficial branding for which some cities are known. - Mazatlán, and hotelier Ernesto Coppel's call to remove live music bands from the boardwalk beaches. - The unforgettable Tijuana Coqueta. - Rosarito and its Baja Beach Fest, which generates both economic benefits and complaints. - Miami Beach is trying with the spring breakers, and it's not going well. I'm not an expert in tourism, but when it comes to Communication, tone and segmentation are everything. And if you don't believe me, ask Viking Ocean Cruises, whose slogan "For the Thinking Person" has made me feel foolish for having traveled on Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd., while at the same time has made me remove it from my list of cruise options. #branding #communication #tourism #advertising

Does self-doubt visit you? This morning, I found the perfect breakfast spot in Athens, right on the dock with a view that could make anyone forget their coffee. We’re talking prime real estate here, where you can see everything—ships coming, ships going, and the sun just starting to yawn over the horizon. After four days at sea, my body was practically begging for something fresh, so I dove headfirst into a mountain of fruit like I was discovering them for the first time. Meanwhile, I was busy gawking at this massive ship in front of me, which I noticed hailed from Hamilton. It was squeezed into a dock so narrow, the boats could probably whisper secrets to each other. The water wasn’t just clean; it was doing this little sparkle dance, catching the first rays of the sunrise. As I sat there thinking, "There’s no way another ship can fit here," wouldn’t you know it? Along comes an even bigger cruise liner, just casually shimmying its way into the space. I couldn’t help but think, “Good luck, buddy. You’ll need it.” But then, to my surprise, it slid right in, as smooth as butter. And that’s when it hit me—sometimes, even the most positive people, like yours truly, get a visit from doubt. But the universe, in all its cheekiness, was using these ships to remind me: don’t doubt, just trust. To top it all off, as if the ship itself wanted to have the last word, its lights blinked at me like we were sharing a secret joke. "See? Told you not to doubt," it seemed to say. Surrounded by all these beautiful ships and with the sun about to make its grand entrance, I couldn’t help but feel incredibly lucky to be awake and alive to witness this. It’s mornings like these that remind me why I’m a proud member of the early risers’ club.
