CWEL Change Maker Britt Cloudsdale is #ignitingchange this #WorkforceDevelopmentMonth! 🔥 “When I started out as a case manager, I thought I'd be able to genuinely help families. After reflecting, I realized I was causing harm. Though we weren't acting with ill intent, child welfare systems are set up to be punitive, and we had limited resources or support to do things differently. I'm at CWEL because I want to be a part of something that's addressing hard things in an effort to build something better.” Get involved in the campaign to ignite change: https://lnkd.in/gmjXRYQv

If you work in Ontario child welfare, no matter in what role, think about how many of these standard meetings you have participated in: - case consult - supervision - verification conference - transfer conference - service plan review - collateral conference - permanency planning meeting - plan of care meeting - foster home replacement planning - adoption breakdown consultation How often can you recall someone bringing up the child or youth’s resilience? Now, challenge yourself to unpack that further. Hone in on the “resilience” we speak of around those tables. Is it genuinely centred in healing … or … is it the catch all for professionals to justify their decision making and move on to the next? #askbetterquestions #digdeeper #knowbetterdobetter #itstartswithyou #redesignwithtruthtelling #focusclarityhope #ckont

Engaging fathers in child welfare cases, especially those involving domestic abuse, can be challenging. But it's crucial for child safety and family healing. Here's how the Safe & Together Model has transformed practice with its domestic abuse-informed and trauma-informed practices: • Focus on the person choosing violence & their pattern of behavior, not isolated incidents • Have equal behavioural & child care expectations for men & women as parents • Assess how perpetrators choices impact family functioning, child wellbeing & safety • Collaborate with the protective parent Want to learn more about working effectively with perpetrators as parents? As a foster parent, I know the urgency of making child welfare a priority. The election is here, and now is the moment to act. Far too many families find themselves in a system that could be better served through community-based support rather than punitive measures. When people hear 'child protective services,' they think of tragic cases—but most families in the system aren’t in immediate danger. This reality calls for a shift in our approach: one that moves beyond crisis intervention to focus on strengthening families before they need intervention. This election, let’s vote for policies that bring real change to our child welfare system. Vote for leaders committed to transforming ‘child-rescue’ into ‘family support.’ Let’s build a future where every child and family has a chance to thrive. #FosterCareMatters #VoteForKids #ChildWelfareReform #ActNow

UnSystems aren’t about tweaks or revisions; they represent a fundamental transformation of how we approach child welfare in America. UnSystems leverage the expertise of those most impacted by the system - parents, young people, and the communities they come from. By co-designing solutions with these stakeholders, we can create a system that is not only more effective but also more responsive to the unique needs of each family. Ready to #UnSystemTheSystem? Imagine a world where love and connection are our guiding principles, where we respond to children, family and community with empathy and understanding. This is the world we can create, if we are willing to practice love and connection in our daily lives. I know my community, my people practice love daily, but a system of child removal does not know love. My TEDx talk offers a simple act of love and justice for a better world. In just 12 minutes, I highlight how we can make this world better, together. In my talk, I bring together expert and professional knowledge to offer a solution to the child welfare system's failures. In particular I highlight how we can support families and parents subject to domestic and family violence without taking their child. We must accept that what exists right now is not working and be prepared to move. If you're interested in engaging with someone with expert knowledge in this space, finding better solutions, better policy and practice or hearing a yarn yourself please reach out. This world has to be better. Link to TEDx Talk: https://lnkd.in/evMw-tuG
