Traditionally associated with heating homes and other domestic uses, today, its primary role is far more impactful. At Reading Anthracite, 90% of our carbon is now utilized in Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs), marking a significant shift towards the next generation of steelmaking. This transition represents not just a change in usage, but a transformation in how we view and value our resources in the pursuit of sustainability. As we celebrate the vital role that anthracite plays in powering the green steel movement, it’s crucial that our industry as a whole better acknowledges this shift. New Report: POSCO Installed Pilot Facility to Test Hydrogen-Based Ironmaking Technology, Aiming for Carbon Neutrality by 2050 by Fuel Cells Works POSCO has just taken a major step toward carbon neutrality with its groundbreaking Hydrogen Reduction Ironmaking (HyREX) process. By shifting from coal to hydrogen in steel production, POSCO is set to drastically cut emissions in one of the most carbon-intensive industries. On September 29, at its Technical Research Laboratories in Pohang, South Korea, POSCO successfully installed a pilot facility for the HyREX process, where the fluid reaction of iron ore in a fluidized reduction furnace was observed. The pilot plant marks a significant milestone in transitioning steelmaking towards a hydrogen-based future. Here’s why this is important: * The HyREX process uses hydrogen at high temperatures to produce Direct Reduced Iron (DRI), reducing reliance on carbon-heavy coal. * POSCO is targeting full commercialization of HyREX by 2030 and plans to retrofit its existing steel plants for carbon-neutral production by 2050. * By 2040, POSCO aims to cut carbon emissions by 50%, directly addressing future policies like the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). As steel remains the “rice of industry,” decarbonizing this sector will have a massive impact on global supply chains—from automotive to renewable energy industries. HyREX will not only enable cleaner steel production but also strengthen the sustainable supply of critical materials for industries like electric vehicles and wind power. It’s inspiring to see POSCO leading the charge toward greener steel production. This is a model that other heavy industries should look to as the path forward for achieving global net-zero goals. Is the Middle East steel market approaching a turning point? Global pressure is rising for energy-intensive industries like steel to step up and play a much bigger role in our journey to net zero. Carbon neutrality has become more of an ambition for MENA and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) over recent years. Although the Middle East has been slow to implement strict climate targets in line with the Paris Agreement, steel production in this region emits far less CO2 than the global average. Moderated by Marc Godin, Director of Technology for PTAC, this conversation featured Rebecca Schulz, Alberta Minister of Environment and Protected Areas, Justin Riemer, CEO of Emissions Reduction Alberta, Kendall Dilling, President of Pathways Alliance, and John Adams, President and CEO of NGIF Capital. The discussion covered topics including progress on methane emission reductions in Alberta, carbon capture and storage, reducing emissions while growing the economy, the Emissions Testing Centre, and the diversity of innovation present in Alberta.
