US Intelligence Community Highlights Growing Cyber Threats in 2024 Annual Assessment The Office of the Director of National Intelligence's (ODNI) recent report highlights a concerning rise in cyber threats facing the US. Here are four key takeaways: ▶️ The report identifies accelerating competition between nation-states, regional conflicts, and sophisticated non-state actors as major drivers of cyber threats. ▶️ China is the most active and persistent cyber threat to US infrastructure, businesses, and government networks. This includes espionage efforts and potential pre-positioning for attacks on critical infrastructure. ▶️ While Russia's focus has been on Ukraine, the report warns of their continued capability for cyberattacks on critical infrastructure in the US and allied countries. ▶️ Iran is expected to continue its opportunistic cyber operations and influence campaigns. This report underscores the urgent need for robust cybersecurity measures across all sectors. Read the full story on Infosecurity Magazine here: https://bit.ly/3v0T6Dr

In The Australian Financial Review today foreign affairs and defence correspondent Andrew Tillett shares exclusive insights into Imperva's latest 2024 #DDoS Threat Landscape report. Worsening geostrategic turmoil, headlined by the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, has triggered a rapid escalation of #cyberattacks globally in the first six months of 2024, while cyberattacks shutting down access to Chinese websites have ramped up significantly. The report also looks at the industries the most targeted: the financial sector is far and away the most popular target for DDoS attacks globally, but the biggest growth was attacks on telecommunications and internet service providers, up 548 per cent, followed by healthcare (236 per cent) and gaming (208 per cent). If we read various cybersecurity doctrinal documents issued in the US and Europe, we can see that 4 countries - China, Russia, North Korea and Iran - are cited as the main sources of cybersecurity threats. Many people write about groups that allegedly originate from these countries, but I have never seen any studies of the cyber security situation inside these countries. Who is attacking them? It cannot be that they are not of interest to other states or groups. And while I know the cyber security situation inside Russia quite well; I can also find materials about China, there is almost no information about the other two countries. The more interesting it was for me to see the report ‘Iran's cybersecurity threatscape for 2021-H1 2024’ (https://lnkd.in/gzY4jsdB) released by Positive Technologies, which for the first time lifts the veil of secrecy and reveals some interesting cases and examples of incidents and attacks in Iran, as well as actions of cyber groups against this Middle Eastern country.

Published my latest piece in NDCP. In this Executive Policy Brief, I tried to discuss #cybersecurity in the context of the #WestPhilippineSea issue. I also tackled cyber attacks perpetrated against the Philippines and how they disrupt and threaten the country’s pursuit of its sovereign rights. I argue that China’s illegal, coercive, aggressive, and deceptive activities in the West Philippine Sea, together with cyber espionage, cyber attacks, and malign information operations, are challenges that require a robust response from the Philippines. Given these, I forwarded the following policy considerations: a) Improve collaboration with regional partners in addressing cyber attacks related to the West Philippine Sea; b) Clarify the whole-of-nation approach in the West Philippine Sea and determine the importance of cyber therein; c) Strengthen the National Cybersecurity Inter-Agency Committee by establishing its role in the WPS; d) Develop a cyber doctrine for WPS that supports the Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept by the Department of National Defense; and e) Further promote cognition in cyberspace. Information sharing is crucial in today’s world It is crucial to share reliable and verified information In cybersecurity it is important to share hands-on experience I am really proud to be a part of a very exclusive project in cyber space Take a moment to read: in partnership with CERT-UA and the State Service of Special Communications and Information Protection of Ukraine, CYBER RANGES, a simulation training platform, has launched TRYZUB – a new service for cyberdrill-grade training and developing cyber resilience competencies. It will bolster the cyber defense capabilities of security operations centers and incident response teams through high-fidelity cyberattack emulations rooted in the latest threat intelligence. Through this international collaboration between the public and private sectors, organizations worldwide will adopt Ukraine's experience on the frontlines of the first-ever war in cyberspace. The next-gen cyber range scenarios for TRYZUB, developed by CERT-UA, replicate the real-world attacks on critical infrastructures in the safe-to-fail sandbox CYBER RANGES environment. The drills offer participants the role of a cybersecurity team facing cyber incidents of Gamaredon and Sandworm threat actors and related hacker groups. For over a decade they have targeted sectors such as defense, communications, energy, finance, food, government, IT, transportation and water. The TRYZUB team stands with Ukraine, donating a substantial portion of its revenue to UNITED24. Learn more about TRYZUB: https://lnkd.in/dTkCWfs3 Matt Burgess|Marius Houwen|Marshall S.
