ARE YOU READY? Most people claim they are ready for when a crisis hits. Let’s put it to the test: • Can you calm yourself down when you see a bunch of people wounded on the ground so you can stay focussed on the threat instead of helping others? • Can you treat life-threatening wounds? • Can you carry a 90kg/200lbs person for at least 100m/110yards? • Can you overpower an unarmed attacker? • Can you overpower an armed attacker? • Can you calmly and efficiently report a crisis to the emergency services? • Can you lead people to stay aware and form a cordon around the area? • Do you have a fully charged mobile phone, medical tools and a flashlights on you at all times? You don’t have to brag in the comments. I know everyone fails at least one of them. Stay ready, so you don’t have to get ready.

The murder of the United Health CEO is a terrible thing. For those of us in the protection industry the event certainly points out a number of elements. I have received a significant number of phone calls from the heads of security and legal of companies related to "what to do". We do not know the details of the security platform for United so my comments are not related to them, my comments are the basic for all. Every company is NOT going to add armed protection professionals to protect executives although some companies should. Here are a few basics for everyone to follow: 1) start with situational awareness - put your phones down and pay attention to who is around you, where you are at and what is happening. Get your head up and keep it on a swivel. I can talk about this all day but will not. 2) have a good travel plan and keep it low profile (executives do not need their schedule out there for the world to see). 3) do not dress flashy or bring attention to yourself - stay low key. 4) The highest risk area for a person is the movement to and from the vehicle (to the building or from the building to the vehicle) - observation and close protection become critical here. I have a lot more - let me know if we can help. Remember, Hinkley was able to shoot President Reagan with a full protection team in place. Did you know he bought his gun at a pawn shop in Dallas? Did you know his first target was President Carter? He was within feet of the President and did not take the shot because of the presence of a protective agent from the U.S. Secret Service. Stay safe out there!!!
