Protecting your business from the inside out https://hubs.la/Q02TBr440 Small businesses are three times more likely to face cyberattacks than large firms, often resulting in significant financial and operational losses. The key lies in protecting your business from within. In 2024 alone, half of UK businesses reported being targeted, with internal weaknesses like human error playing a critical role. Implementing robust access controls, regular audits, and effective incident response plans are essential first steps. Additionally, promoting cybersecurity awareness across your team is vital.

Word of the day: *HARMONIZE* 👇Link to a document released last month from the White House also discussing this. 🌱We must grow out of the quagmire of “check the box” and cybersecurity decisions based on “gut” and naivety. ☯️ Modern frameworks give us a start. Only with this mature conversation can regulations positively impact industry, government and HUMANS.
This Thursday my testimony to the U.S. House of Representatives Oversight Committee Hearing on Harmonizing Cyber Standards is going to focus on a few things. 1. A growing number of regulators are making cybersecurity standards compliance mandatory, which in theory is good, but are moving out in a disorganized way, subjecting regulated organizations to a jumble of conflicting requirements. 2. There’s some work to do on harmonizing the actual technical controls, but the bigger issues are around audits and incident reporting. 3. We need reciprocity for cybersecurity audits under different standards frameworks, so organizations aren’t paying for five different audits each year that look for slightly different things. 4. We need a single clearinghouse for reporting cyber incidents in a common format that can work across the interagency and with major vendors.

Exactly the kind of points we made to the Office of Inspector General (and which need further amplification) Mike Edgerton, CSyP, CPP, CISM, FSyI, F.ISRM, and Beth Austin-DeFares. Regulatory harmonization will help so many teams free up time and resources to do the work of infosec instead of repeatedly answer the same (or very similar) questions about infosec.
