Born in the 1960s, Fluxus was all about breaking down the boundaries between art and everyday life. Its rebellious spirit still resonates today, and bringing that energy into a private collection could change the way we think about art. Instead of focusing on traditional, static displays, imagine a collection that's constantly evolving, interactive and challenges the role of the viewer. That is why the collection's manifesto explicitly embraces the concept of 'FLUX', adapting Fluxus principles to contemporary contexts. Here are key points that demonstrate the connections between Fluxus ideals and the DSL Collection's approach: Democratising access to art: The DSLCollection uses digital platforms and virtual reality to make art globally accessible, echoing Fluxus's goal of breaking down barriers between art and everyday life. Interactivity and participation: The virtual museum invites visitors to engage with artworks in new ways, in keeping with Fluxus's emphasis on audience participation. Embracing new media: By using VR, video games and other digital technologies, the collection continues Fluxus's tradition of exploring contemporary forms of expression. Challenging traditional institutions: The DSL Collection offers virtual alternatives to conventional museums, much as Fluxus challenged the established norms of the art world. Focus on process and experience: The collection's emphasis on the artistic journey rather than the final product is in keeping with Fluxus principles. Some key differences - The highly technological focus of the DSLCollection contrasts with the often low-tech approach of Fluxus. The use of immersive technologies and digital platforms could be seen as creating a spectacle, which could be at odds with Fluxus's often anti-spectacular approach. Fluxus often emphasised direct, physical interaction with artworks and performances. The virtual could be criticised for removing this tactile, immediate experience that was central to many Fluxus works. In summary, the DSLCollection's approach can also be seen as an evolution of Fluxus principles, adapting them to contemporary contexts and technologies while retaining the core values of accessibility, interactivity and challenging artistic norms.

Here’s my favourite encounter with technology this week 🐈 It’s called “Giant Cat” and the premise is simple: How would the world look if humans became as small as ants? There are three reasons why I loved this: 1) For the first time, it put me in the shoes (?) of an insect I’ve never related to before (and even gave this “dog person” a whole new appreciation for cats - talk about paws for thought 👀) 2) It made me think: how will entertainment look and feel in 50 or 100 years? (my guess is that it’ll be much more immersive, AI-driven and personalised… and for reasons I’ll explain in a future post, featuring a lot more animals 🐨) 3) The exhibit was free and open to everyone (this sort of thing continues to amaze me about London) For me it goes to show that immersive technologies don’t need to be serious or expensive. Instead, it’s all about offering… what would you call it… pawspective? 🐾 —————— 👀 Tomorrow’s your last chance to visit The Oulim, a free exhibition about the fusion of tech and culture at London’s Saatchi Gallery: https://lnkd.in/e5YighxN It’s full of art spanning media, metaverse, web3, gaming, VR, NFTs and AI, all of which is from South Korea 🌏 👉 I’d also suggest checking out KALLOS, the designers behind the Giant Cat series: https://lnkd.in/e9hwDRGV #technology #innovation #art #cats #XR #Korea #London

Big congrats to Felix & Paul Studios for embarking on what will undoubtedly be a groundbreaking experience coming to AREA15 next year. “Interstellar Arc” adds a truly AAA experience to Area 15’s offerings, and to the entire landscape of “immersive experiences”. Meow Wolf’s Omega Mart will have a stunning and complimentary neighbor that will help to elevate the entire industry’s quality of standard. As is the case with most emerging industries and emerging forms, there’s always an awkward first phase where low-quality copycats and quick money-grabs can take advantage of a general audience’s rabid appetite and lack of learned discernment. Though such efforts bring some amount of short-term fuel to an industry, it ultimately dilutes the promise of emerging forms, confuses and disappoints consumers, and threatens the long-term success of the entire ecosystem. High-quality matters, and is worth paying for, and that’s why I’m so psyched for what Felix & Paul + A15 are courageously bringing to Vegas. The potential for “Hyper-Reality” aka LBE VR has still only barely been tapped. The opportunity to truly transport people into fully animated and realized worlds that are anchored to physical sculpture is incredibly exciting. Can’t wait to experience Interstellar Arc in 2025! https://lnkd.in/gpNbqSVG
