💡 Industry Manager Jacques Lovell: "Cycling services are in prime position to spearhead the cycling ecosystem’s transition by showcasing their contribution to a greener, more digital and resilient European economy." during the session: The European Commission’s report on the EU mobility industrial transition: What is its impact on the cycling industry? 🚴♂️ During this session, Confederation of the European Bicycle Industry - CONEBI introduced the #MobilityTransitionPathway (MTP) and its impact on the cycling industry. Developed by the European Commission, the MTP is a comprehensive plan consisting of specific actions and measures aimed at supporting companies’ digital and green transition and the long-term resilience and competitiveness of the cycling industrial ecosystem in Europe. 🙌 Following this, there was a panel discussion on the impact of the MTP, its implementation, and the so-called “pledge phase.” The pledges will support the monitoring and assessment of the progress made by companies and associations, and will represent a tool for recognizing areas or initiatives that could benefit from EU-level support. 👉 Would you like more info on the MTP and pledging? Cycling Industries Europe is delighted to announce that it has joined European Commission’s ITS Advisory Group. This Advisory Group will be working on the implementation of the ITS Directive and CIE’s involvement in this initiative puts it and the cycling industry in a prime position to play a role in DG Move’s work programme for ITS over the next four years. This activity will compliment CIE’s engagement in the NAPCORE initiative in which work is being carried out to develop data standards for cycling, as well as CIE’s engagement in the MegaBITS_EU project, a European funded project (via Interreg North Sea Programme) developed to deploy ITS technologies in the field, via five flagship regions and cities. The importance of cycling data and the subsequent integration of cycling within the broader ITS ecosystem is a crucial area for the improvement of cycling safety, convenience and comfort and CIE looks forward to collaborating with the stakeholders of the ITS Advisory Group to achieve this. #InterregNorthSea #BITS #MegaBITS #CyclingITS #Cycling

It's great to see the EU's main institutions working together to make cycling an option for more Europeans. The declaration lists positive commitments and future improvements. But there is a trap in positive thinking: the idea that things can be added on top of faulty, dangerous and patchy infrastructure leads to less, not more, safety for cyclists. Together with Zoltán Sipos and Barbora Janauerová, I analysed investments into infrastructure in a project funded by Journalismfund Europe, and later continued the analysis as a fellow at the School of Transnational Governance. Living in Florence allowed me to become a commuter cyclist myself. These are the commitments I would like to see in the declaration: - Not a single euro is to be spent on infrastructure that endangers cyclists; - No more investment into roads without a vulnerable road users' needs assessment; - Cross-border police cooperation to crack down on bike thefts by organised crime; - Cycling-related ad hoc conditionalities for all countries every time they receive EU funds; - Designing investment to replace private car commutes with cycling, rather than sprinkle a few favours to cyclings in car-obsessed contexts.
