Pharmacist in tech? A shocker perhaps but a welcome one indeed Picture this: a pharmacist working behind a tech desk or even an advanced technologically refined lab, rather than a counter full of pills. Is that unusual? well, that depends on what you consider unusual, Yet it's a reality that's fast reshaping our world. A much-needed development. Pharmacists have moved beyond their usual confines. They are increasingly venturing into technology, challenging prejudices, and broadening their horizons. They are pioneering digital health solutions, employing AI for diagnostics, drug discovery, and much more by using their extensive understanding of drugs. Their unique knowledge of pharmacology and patient care, paired with technological expertise, results in an efficient synergy. They're innovating by developing applications for medication management, software to detect drug interactions, and even AI models to predict illness progression. But why is this transition so important? It represents the intersection of two critical sectors: healthcare and technology. It represents the emergence of a new breed of professionals capable of meeting the demands of today's healthcare industry. Don't be surprised the next time you hear about a pharmacist working in technology. Applaud them for questioning the norms, moving outside of their comfort zones, and leading a movement that will undoubtedly improve healthcare. Let us begin to recognize and appreciate the trailblazers in our midst. Give a shout-out to a pharmacist in technology you know, and let's get the word out about this surprising yet potent combination. #PharmacistsInTech #DigitalHealthInnovation #AIinMedicine #PharmacyTechIntegration #HealthTechAdvancements #MedicationManagementApps #DrugSafetySoftware #AIforHealthcare #PatientCareTech #FutureOfPharmacy #InnovativePharmacists #TechSavvyPharmacy #DigitalHealthcareTrends #PharmacistLeaders #AIinDiagnostics

Playing #REPharma2024 Day 2 catch up! What were my favourite learnings? ✅️ A fascinating talk from Giovanny Leon from Novartis on how we need to shift from ex factory pricing focus to the price some patients end up paying once the wholesaler/pharmacy/physician office/hospital mark ups and local taxes are added on - in some countries those add on costs result in a final price which is more than DOUBLE the ex factory price. How? ➡️ A combination of looking at how we can lower ex factory price AND work in partnership with the wider healthcare ecosystem to lower those add on costs ✅️ Another equally fascinating case study shared so eloquently by Lance Hill from Within3, on how their #ai platform enabled a #pharmaco to successfully increase patient access and internal impact of #medicalaffairs How? ➡️ Through the integration of all the disparate pieces of #data collected from multiple medical #channels (#medinfo, #MSLs, #congresses, #adboards, etc) to produce both insights and recommended #nextbestactions Sometimes, the diamond nuggets of insight are to be found in the smaller break away rooms. 💊 **PharmacyX: Honoring Pharmacists' Expertise, Streamlining Processes** In an age where AI is increasingly integrated into healthcare, PharmacyX takes a different approach. We firmly believe in the irreplaceable value of a pharmacist's expertise and judgment, especially when it comes to clinical checks. Unlike other systems that rely heavily on AI, PharmacyX doesn’t automate this critical process. Instead, it empowers pharmacists by allowing a clinical check to be saved for up to 12 months, provided there are no changes to the patient’s medication. This approach not only respects the professional role of pharmacists but also streamlines workflows, giving you more time to focus on what matters most—patient care. While other systems use AI to automate parts of the clinical check, pharmacists are still responsible for every decision made by the AI. In fact, their AI only covers around 40% of prescriptions, meaning you’re still manually checking a significant portion. This can limit the overall efficiency gains you might expect. PharmacyX is inspired by general medical practices, where a doctor might review a patient’s condition and decide that a follow-up isn’t necessary for a year, provided everything remains stable. Similarly, PharmacyX allows you to determine when it’s appropriate to save a clinical check for up to 12 months or when it’s necessary to review each time, especially for high-risk medications or patients. Ultimately, PharmacyX puts the power back in your hands, ensuring that your professional judgment remains at the forefront. It’s about flexibility, control, and maintaining the highest standards of patient safety, without relying on AI to make those critical decisions. PharmacyX: Where your expertise leads the way. 🌟 #PharmacyX #PharmacyLeadership #PharmacistJudgment #PatientSafetyFirst #HealthcareInnovation #ClinicalExcellence #PharmacyPractice #PharmacyEfficiency #TechInPharmacy #PatientCareMatters #PharmacySoftware #HealthcareTech #PharmacistEmpowerment #AIInHealthcare #PharmacySolutions

Thank you Bryce Platt, PharmD for bring this to light. This is going to be an unpopular opinion especially when most of my contacts are pharmacists: pharmacists and pharmacy technicians will be the first healthcare workers replaced by AI. 1) Pharmacy staff are beholden to strict regulations and must practice within a narrow window based on guidelines and evidence based medicine. Basically ZERO creativity is encouraged either by law or by the PBM gods. AI is great for regimented and repetitive work that needs to be as standardized as possible. 2) Mental health burnout and staff shortages are real. Regardless of what you want to call it, there is a massive problem with the amount of work in pharmacies and the amount of people doing the work. AI can work 24/7 without lunch breaks, maternity/paternity leave, vacations, etc. AI can also do this work in a way that is customized for the needs of your business. Basically, if you are a pharmacy owner this is the new ScriptPro except it can replace 99% of what your staff does especially with communication. 3) Saving grace. Legally and ethically you will still need at least one pharmacist. So it might get to the point that every pharmacy even the huge mail order pharmacies basically just need one pharmacist as the legal ventriloquist of the AI machine. There are about 45,000 pharmacies in the US so we will need at least that many pharmacists to hold down the fort. Soap box over... Kind of wish I used ChatGPT to write this now... oh well.

The AI replacement for pharmacists is here: DrugGPT --- If you're a #clinician, you know about clinical decision support tools. Technology that is (hopefully) integrated into your workflow to prevent errors. For example, in the #pharmacy when you enter a new prescription for a patient, it will create alerts if that new drug interacts with other drugs connected to the patient in the pharmacy management system. --- Now we have the next iteration--utilizing generative AI. University of Oxford developed a new tool for prescribers that can act like a #pharmacist in your pocket: DrugGPT Article in the comments It can list the recommended drugs for a specific patient situation, as well as adverse effects that may occur. Then it can explain its reasoning. Like a pharmacist. --- The goal isn't to replace pharmacists. Probably... It's to prevent #MedicationErrors and allow clinicians to care for their patients with less admin, including back-and-forth discussions with pharmacists that find issues later in the chain. Maybe it could even learn about formularies and avoid prior authorizations! --- With the current ratios of patients to providers, nobody will be complaining about some more clinical decision support. And pharmacists will still need to be an integral part of the healthcare team. Thanks to Beju Shah, PharmD, MBA for bringing this tool to my attention.

So does it have the capability to walk the patient through the use of their new ozempic pen ? Does it reach out to each prescribing provider for drug to drug interactions? Review missed dose recommendations? Recommend medications based on reduced renal function ? Cross reference the applicable formulary and recommend affordable formulary alternatives? Does it have the ability to receive pharmacogenomic information and take that into account for recommendations on medications and dosing? Can it cross reference and apply which discount programs are applicable to save the patient money? Check which pharmacies have a medication that is on back order in stock? And can it adapt to a variety of levels of Healthcare knowledge in its verbiage for clear communication? Does it express empathy when a patient has lost a loved one? Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are patient advocates. I have the impression this is still a useful tool, but not a pharmacist replacement....thoughts?
