12 Years Ago | My First Job After National Service
I started as a field supervisor in Awudua, a small community near Tarkwa. The experience was nothing short of transformative, and every moment, no matter how tough, shaped who I am today.
I still vividly recall the tipper trucks we rode deep into the bush, cutting through uneven terrain. I measured about 4 hectares of cleared deep forest, surrounded by giant trees—a daunting yet exhilarating task. When our water supply ran out, we quenched our thirst directly from the streams.
The bush had its perks, like the hearty meals we enjoyed, often paired with freshly hunted bush meat. But it also came with challenges. Senior excavator operators—some old enough to be my grandparents—were a tough bunch. They gave me a hard time, testing my patience and resolve at every turn.
There were moments of danger too: snakes lurking in the undergrowth, swarms of bees, and other unexpected hazards. And after long days of work, we returned to our rented apartments, where we had no electricity—yet, we found ways to adapt and keep moving.
Lessons Learned;
Looking back, every difficulty was a stepping stone. These experiences taught me:
Focus and attention to detail: Measuring land accurately in such challenging conditions required precision.
Resilience and perseverance: I wanted to give up many times, but I stayed the course.
Leadership and people management: Leading and supervising a team of experienced workers taught me how to balance authority with respect.
Adaptability and self-motivation: Working in unpredictable environments pushed me to find solutions and stay motivated.
Why It Matters!
When I say trust the process, it’s not just a phrase. I’ve lived it. These challenges were grueling and sometimes overwhelming. There were days I wanted to quit and return home to Takoradi. But those moments of struggle toughened me mentally and emotionally, giving me the strength I draw on even today.
If you’re going through a tough time, know this: it will all make sense one day. The things you’re enduring now are shaping the person you’re meant to become. Embrace the process—it’s building you in ways you can’t yet see.
