Chess and Intellectual Property: A Strategic Intersection Chess isn’t just a game; it’s a harmonious blend of artistry, strategy, and innovation. Modern chess thrives on the brilliance of engines like Stockfish and AlphaZero, powered by advanced algorithms. These innovations, protected by patents and copyrights, have sparked debates about ownership and licensing in the software world. At the same time, chess sets symbolize creativity and craftsmanship. From the timeless Staunton design to bespoke masterpieces, these designs are often protected under design patents, with legal cases showcasing the importance of defending artistic integrity. As chess evolves in both the digital and artistic spheres, intellectual property continues to play a pivotal role in safeguarding creativity and innovation. From coding chess engines to crafting elegant pieces, the intersection of chess and IP tells a story of protection and progress. How do you see intellectual property shaping the future of chess? Let’s discuss! Chess with a Twist: My Favorite 4 Variants Chess is nice and I like to play it but sticking to the FIDE rules is boring and games are too long. I hence like to invent variants that make the game shorter and more intense. Here are my four favorite ones: n-Block Variant: In this quirky twist on the classic FIDE chess, all the usual rules still apply, but there’s a fun little twist: to claim victory, you need to put your opponent’s King in check while leaving them with n (or fewer) escape routes! Standard chess is just a 0-block. The n-Vanish Variant: Now, let’s up the ante with the n-Vanish Variant! Here, all the classic FIDE chess rules still reign supreme, but each piece comes with its very own counter - like a mini scoreboard! Whenever a piece is threatened, its counter ticks up. If it reaches n, poof! It vanishes into thin air! When two pieces threaten each other (e.g. queen and queen) counters increase in turn. The King isn’t exempt - he can disappear too! When a pawn gets promoted, its new identity inherits the counter of its former self. Talk about a piece with a past! Standard chess is just an infinity-vanish. The Cemetery Variant: And now for something a little spooky - the Cemetery Variant! In this version, all the FIDE rules are still in play, but with a twist that brings in 63 euro coins! When a piece is captured, a coin is placed on the square it left behind, marking it as a cemetery for future moves. Once a square is a cemetery, it’s off-limits - no stepping on those hallowed grounds! Knights can still jump over these ghostly squares like the heroes they are! The Ultimate Cemetery Variant: A Cemetery Variant where pieces jumpover during capture, i.e. capture a piece sheltered behind a grave. The first two variants might be good training tools: let the computer abide by n and progressively reduce the students' advantage by modifying their n'.

Updating Checkmate Chronicles with Fischer Random Chess. Yes, Detective Murder Chess is still coming, but I wanted to get this out there! Introduced in 1996, this variant was Bobby Fischer's retort to players memorizing openings rather than relying on their wit and strategic depth from the get-go. The pieces on the back rank are shuffled, following a set of rules to ensure that bishops are on opposite colors and the king is neatly tucked between the rooks for castling – yes, castling, because why abandon such a theatrical maneuver? This upheaval was meant to refresh the staleness Fischer perceived in classical chess, pushing players into a cerebral tango from the first move. Some purists scoffed, lamenting the desecration of chess's sacred geometry. Meanwhile, others leapt at the opportunity, eager to prove their mettle in uncharted territories. The chess world, ever so resistant to change, has warmed up to this quirky cousin of classical chess, incorporating it into tournaments and online platforms, proving even the most venerable traditions can stand a little shaking up. Meanwhile, it's been pretty hard to program the opening randomness (even though there are just 960 of them.. I know... I know..) and to get the castling working correctly. It is interesting that there are no opening books, upon which chess AIs rely to make their early game somewhat random and not get into always playing the same mistakes. As always with chess, It's an interesting problem to program.

♟Do you like to play chess? Then you will like this project. 👉Google Labs has introduced a new game called GenChess that allows you to create unique chess pieces using artificial intelligence. The game uses the Gemini Imagen 3 model that generates images based on text descriptions. Players can enter a theme that interests them, such as a sushi or pizza chess set, and create their own design. GenChess offers two styles: classic, reminiscent of traditional chess pieces, and creative, which opens up more room for imagination. If any piece does not meet expectations, it is easy to improve it with the help of additional descriptions. When the set is ready, you can start playing. Google even selects interesting thematic opponents, such as a bot with a taco-style chess set. There are several levels of difficulty and options for playing time. The game demonstrates how artificial intelligence can combine design, creativity, and chess, making the process accessible and fun for everyone. 🔗You can try it here (but the game is not available for all countries): https://lnkd.in/eYG_GXQq

Hi folks, ever thought of learning chess with a shocking twist? Meet Taser Chess by YouTuber Everything Is Hacked, designed to "shock" you into becoming a better player! ● Innovative Learning: This isn't your typical chessboard. Make a wrong move and get a gentle zap from a transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) unit, encouraging you to think strategically—or at least more cautiously! ● Technical Setup: The chessboard features 64 relay-controlled squares and conductive pieces. Each move is tracked and analyzed by the open-source chess engine, Stockfish, running on a Raspberry Pi. ● Electrifying Gameplay: Incorrect moves trigger a zap, not just to punish but to reinforce learning through tactile feedback. The board even guides valid moves by only allowing electricity-free paths for correct play. ● Fun and Challenge: Designed for both education and entertainment, Taser Chess makes each game an electrifying challenge that's sure to keep players on their toes, literally. CHESS Chess is a board game for two players, called White and Black, each controlling an army of chess pieces, with the objective to checkmate the opponent's king. It is sometimes called international chess or Western chess to distinguish it from related games such as xiangqi (Chinese chess) and shogi (Japanese chess). The recorded history of chess goes back at least to the emergence of a similar game, chaturanga, in seventh-century India. The rules of chess as they are known today emerged in Europe at the end of the 15th century, with standardization and universal acceptance by the end of the 19th century. Today, chess is one of the world's most popular games, and is played by millions of people worldwide. Chess is an abstract strategy game that involves no hidden information and no elements of chance. It is played on a chessboard with 64 squares arranged in an 8×8 grid. At the start, each player controls sixteen pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns. White moves first, followed by Black. The game is won by checkmating the opponent's king, i.e. threatening it with inescapable capture. There are also several ways a game can end in a draw. Organized chess arose in the 19th century. Chess competition today is governed internationally by FIDE (Fédération Internationale des Échecs; the International Chess Federation). The first universally recognized World Chess Champion, Wilhelm Steinitz, claimed his title in 1886; Ding Liren is the current World Champion. A huge body of chess theory has developed since the game's inception. Aspects of art are found in chess composition, and chess in its turn influenced Western culture and the arts, and has connections with other fields such as mathematics, computer science, and psychology. One of the goals of early computer scientists was to create a chess-playing machine. In 1997, Deep Blue became the first computer to beat the reigning World Champion in a match when it defeated Garry Kasparov. Today's chess engines are significantly stronger than the best human players and have deeply influenced the development of chess theory; however, chess is not a solved game. #snsinstitutions #snsdesignthinkers #designthinking
