💡 The African Digital Compact (ADC) and Continental Artificial Intelligence Strategy (CAIS) - “In a significant move, the African Union demonstrated its leadership and commitment to Africa’s digital future by adopting the ADC and the CAIS in July 2024. These are not just policy documents; they represent a unified vision. The ADC aims to harness the power of digital technologies for economic growth, societal well-being, and long-term development across the continent. The CAIS aims to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) for sustainable development in Africa, aligning with Agenda 2063 and the sustainable development goals (SDGs). Agenda 2063 is Africa’s 50-year socioeconomic transformation framework, adopted by the African Union in 2013. It focuses on inclusive growth, sustainable development and a united political and economic landscape. It addresses challenges like poverty, inequality and climate change and promotes good governance and peace. As the #AI guidelines launched last week by the Middle East Public Relations Association show, our industry is rapidly adapting and ensuring that, as comms professionals, we have frameworks in place for the ethical use of new tools. The second edition of BLJ Worldwide’s report, 'MENA Tech 2024: Mapping the Technology Landscape,' launches tomorrow and touches upon the use of AI in our industry, as well as lots of other emerging technologies and how they are being used to drive positive change across the region. Building on last year’s success, our report offers a comprehensive overview of the dynamic tech scene across the Middle East and North Africa. We've identified and collated tech trends and developments that will hopefully drive conversation and spark debate. This year’s report sees contributions on smart mobility from Professor Tarek H. I had the privilege of engaging in discussions and workshops alongside leading experts in AI and sustainable development. From exploring AI's role in the green transition to addressing funding requirements for startups, each session was brimming with invaluable insights. 💡 🚀 This dynamic event brought together top policy leaders, distinguished researchers, and influential figures from the corporate and startup sectors across Europe, Africa, Latin America, and Asia. It was a vibrant melting pot of expertise and innovation in AI for Development. 🔍 With objectives spanning from knowledge exchange to exploring novel solutions, the conference served as a pivotal platform for international dialogue and collaboration. We delved deep into the multifaceted challenges posed by AI technologies and collectively crafted a roadmap for future collaboration. 🌍 One particularly illuminating session centered on the critical issue of AI and Disinformation in Africa and Latin America. Led by GIZ/FAIR Forward & D4D Hub AI Working Group, the panel shed light on the profound effects of AI-based disinformation and shared invaluable experiences from AI projects in the region. 📈 As we navigate the intricacies of AI for Development, fostering robust relationships and sharing best practices emerge as pivotal. Justin E. Lane and I recently presented the main findings of CulturePulse's project with the United Nations Development Program country office in Bosnia and Herzegovina as part of UNDP's Global Innovation webinar series. Among other things, we addressed the following questions: What are the primary challenges and limitations encountered when creating and utilising a social digital twin for policy testing? How can the insights gained from the social digital twin be effectively integrated into real-world policy-making to enhance social cohesion and trust? What are the ethical considerations and safeguards necessary to ensure that AI-based models and simulations do not inadvertently harm the communities they aim to benefit?

Proving that it can be a force for good on a global scale is the biggest test for artificial intelligence, at a time when none of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals are on track to be achieved by 2030. AI has the potential to accelerate progress in critical areas like food security, healthcare and poverty alleviation, but a lack of global oversight threatens its beneficial impact.
