A public-private partnership involving the world’s second-largest coffee producer, Vietnam, is resulting in a nationwide database system for forests and coffee-growing areas. Led by the partnership-focused sustainable agriculture nonprofit IDH, Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and Dutch coffee conglomerate JDE Peet's, the collaborative effort is a direct response to the European Union deforestation-free supply chain law, known as EUDR...

Happy to share this news about a new e-learning platform from the @Accountability Framework initiative (AFi), which just launched last month. After many months of hard work from our team, with the support of Proforest, it’s great to finally see it out in the world! The platform is designed to be an educational resource for companies that source or produce commodities like cocoa, beef, palm oil, soy, and others. It helps them upskill their staff on how to use the Accountability Framework to address environmental and social issues in their supply chains. The current set of modules addresses the Framework's key action areas around setting goals, creating internal systems to meet those goals, managing supply chains and suppliers, and managing commodity production. Even more excitingly, we’re working on more modules covering other related topics — such as monitoring and verification, reporting, and collaboration for sustainability — which will be coming later in 2024! Check out this article from @FeedNavigator for more information: https://lnkd.in/gCd48rN2 #supplychains #responsibleproduction #deforestation #humanrights #ecosystemconversion

Last week we published an article in the Netherlands with four interviews with Brazilian partners who are working on the implementation of the EUDR in Brazil. Brazil is well positioned to implement the regulation but is concerned about the impact it might have on small producers, costs and market disturbances. I am very grateful to Ricardo Arioli Silva, Renata Miranda, Andre M Nassar and Paulo Lima for their openess in sharing their concerns with the sector in the Netherlands. Continued dialogue is key to success of the regulation and in stopping deforestation from international supply chains. Most Brazilian producers want the same as consumers in Europe: sustainable production, reliable supply chains and preservation of nature in Brazil. Leading up to the implementation of the EUDR, the challenge is to build (or at least not lose) the connection between Europe and Brazil so that transparent and zero deforestation supply chains become the norm, whether these supply chains end in Europe or elsewhere. The interviews with Ricardo, Paulo, Miranda, and André show that a lot of work still needs to go into the implementation of the EUDR, not only to make it ground-breaking as a regulation but also revolutionary in its impact. https://lnkd.in/dtZuQnUG Julius Seinen, Mirko de Ponti, James Allen, Kim Van Seeters, Ralf Van De Beek, André Driessen, Afke Mulder, Nathalie Gonçalves Aurélio, Tieme Wanders, Felix Lomans, Jouke Knol

Not much reported in English-speaking press - a large majority of EU Agriculture ministers on Tuesday supported a bid by Austria to soften the EU Deforestation Regulations - mainly to prevent a bureaucratic burden on small european forest owners. Other bids are mounting - the European Coffee Federation stated in February that the EUDR's impact on the coffee trade would be “shattering, not least for the millions of smallholder producers for whom the EU is a significant marketplace,” whilst both Indonesia and Malaysia - concerned about the millions of smallholders in the Palm supply chain - have called EUDR a form of "neo-colonialism". With preparedness in producer countries still very uncertain, EUDR seems to be under assault from many sides. Meanwhile companies have to race ahead to carry out the due diligence, traceability and physical mapping of tens of millions of small farms in developing countries and all are concerned about the prospect of massive fines. Expect an almighty regulatory bunfight for the remaining months of the year...!

According to Le Campion et al. (2019) conventional and organic farming differs in many ways as both system of farming offers distinct agricultural approaches and produces different outcomes and impact. Blow is an article of mine highlighting key differences between both. https://lnkd.in/eK7SxuAX

Let's transform agrifood systems— one contract at a time. Agrifood systems are at the heart of the climate and nature crisis, contributing 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions and driving significant nature loss. But they also hold the power to lead the solution. Legal contracts are critical tools for helping food and agriculture companies turn ambitious climate and nature goals into actionable, enforceable commitments. Contracts in agrifood systems can: ✅ Ensure accountability and delivery. ✅ Build resilient supply chains and comply with regulations like the EU Deforestation Regulation. ✅ Foster innovation by enabling collaboration, incentivising regenerative farming, and scaling sustainable solutions across the value chain. 👉 Discover how your legal frameworks can drive transformation in agrifood systems here: https://lnkd.in/gsJV-uUc #food #agriculture #law

In this blog for The Chancery Lane Project (TCLP) I touch on just some of the many ways organisations can harness their legal contracts to mitigate their climate and nature risks and help transform agrifood systems. The challenges facing the food and agriculture sectors are manifold, but so are the opportunities, and collective action is growing. I had the pleasure of attending the recent launch of IGD (Institute of Grocery Distribution)'s Net Zero Transition Plan for the UK Food System, which is one example of this. Contracts are key to implementing ambitious targets and commitments, and facilitating collaboration and innovation across the food value chain. ➡️ Read the blog post: https://lnkd.in/gsJV-uUc ➡️ Find our more about TCLP's work in the food and agriculture sectors: https://lnkd.in/eXpYQDKE #ClimateAction #NetZero #Food #Law
