We've been lying to ourselves. Well some of us. A great print ad can run on social media and it will still be read. An amazing TV spot can air online, and it will still be watched. Great advertising ideas are very seldom constrained by the medium. Great means it works. Every ad must first grab the attention of a person, and hold it. This is why boring advertising so seldom works. Screw that one exception out of the millions of ads people ignore. If no one notices an ad, it has failed despite the message. We are in the attention business.

Well, sometimes is good to THINK PINK! 🧠 Way back in the 1960s, Howard Luck Gossage was an American advertising innovator and during the "Mad Men" era, often referred to as "The Socrates of San Francisco". Gossage used humor, intrigue, outrage and imaginative flights of fancy to win his audience’s attention, affection and response. He ran an advertising agency out of a converted firehouse in San Francisco, which became a hub for influential thinkers and creatives of the time. The "ad platform technique" refers to Gossage's innovative approach to advertising, where he emphasized creating one advertisement at a time and carefully evaluating its impact before moving on to the next ad. Why is this ad labeled as offensive? Is it because the child doesn't fit the narrow beauty standards often expected on billboards? Or is it because he challenges conventional notions of what a 'perfect' smile should look like? To me, this ad champions inclusivity and diversity, reminding us that health is more important than perfection. I recently saw this ad that initially struck me as offensive, and I wondered if I was being overly sensitive. However, waking up to find that someone else had the same reaction and even put their thoughts on the billboard was eye-opening. I mean an entire agency/marketing team approved this and it went live.
