I find this fascinating. A survey in the US showed 52% of TikTok users now say they use it to get news on a regular basis. That is 20% more than in 2020. Firstly, this makes me feel very old. Secondly, people in PR need to keep up with these trends. For example, what does this mean when looking at the recent US elections when a low percentage of Republican voters now admit to consuming news from traditional sources? #PR #news #influence

Sometimes you see a post on LinkedIn that’s so spot-on that you just have to amplify it and give credit to the creator. That’s the case with Shallot Communications and their post about preparing for the upcoming elections. Check out the link to their post in the comments. There are many important take-aways, but here’s the two most important. 1. 50% of companies haven’t started planning how they’ll handle communications around the November elections. 2. If you’re among the unprepared, NOW is the time to start the discussion. If you need guidance, follow Shallot’s recommendations. If you need more support, engage a comms professional to walk you through the planning process. Occasionally I get asked why I promote people or firms that directly compete with what I do. For me, LinkedIn has always been about sharing good crisis communications advice, not about promoting myself. Lots of people have good insights, so it just makes sense to share their smart thinking. If they get some business out of it, then they deserve it. And to be honest, there’s plenty of crisis work to go around. #crisis #crisispreparedness #crisiscommunications

If true, this isn't just electoral fraud: it's financial fraud too. Losing candidates get "Short Money" for their party as long as they win at least 2 seats: "the amount payable to qualifying parties is £22,295.86 for every seat won at the last General Election plus £44.53 for every 200 votes gained by the party" (source; https://lnkd.in/ecGgtjUA. ) - so they'd get about £400 for this candidate, and I think that's per financial year for the duration of this parliament, i.e. a total of about £2000. Prospective candidates have to put down a deposit of £500 to appear on the ballot, which tends to eliminate most spurious and fraudulent candidates, In this case I reckon Reform UK, with a seemingly AI-generated candidate and a few hundred quid on marketing (if that) will probably make a profit of over £1000. Multiply that by a few hundred seats where they knew they had no chance of winning and possibly didn't run a real candidate, and this reaches the level where there should be serious police involvement. Some of these candidates, including this chap, had addresses in the Channel Islands - population 170k. Is there a "Mark Matlock" anywhere in those islands, and does he look anything like this?
⭐ EDIT: It does indeed appear that Mark is actually quite real - I've seen footage of him speaking (will link to it in the comments below!) Last week Mark Matlock stood for the Reform UK party in Clapham & Brixton Hill - gaining nearly 2,000 votes 📊 The only problem is - he appears to have been an AI-generated person - aka he might not exist. Whilst it's hard for anyone online to prove this beyond doubt, this hasn't been the only case of Reform candidates looking slightly suspicious (beyond the usual!) 😄 On Twitter many other people have come forward sharing similar stories of candidates, often with websites or social profiles that don't even show a photo of the candidate (see South Dorset candidate Morgan Young). Mark's website went offline as soon as the vote ended, which was quite convenient - but thanks to the Wayback Machine you can access a copy of it below: https://lnkd.in/eJHazSnx And how does this relate to marketing? Well - someone on Twitter suggested this is a practise termed as "pre-market testing" - whereby a business might advertise a non-existent product to guage levels of interest. In this case they might not have had a proper (real) candidate to put forward, so they invented one instead 🤷♂️ The great investigative media outlet Byline Times and their Chief Reporter Josiah Mortimer covered this story a few days ago, and there's also a great thread about it on Reddit too 👏 #reform #elections #markmatlock
