This #ThanksgivingDay, we give a heartfelt thanks to our farmer-owners and everyone who helps get dairy from farm to (Thanksgiving) table. 🦃🌽🍁 Our dairy farmers couldn’t do what they do without help from our dedicated Cooperative employees and partners across the country and around the world. By enjoying dairy in your Thanksgiving dinner, dessert and second or third helpings, you’re supporting them!

Million Meals Program Transforms into “Hoosier Hogs to Homes” INDIANAPOLIS, IN – The long-standing Million Meals program, a partnership between Feeding Indiana's Hungry and Indiana Pork, which has provided invaluable support to communities across Indiana by combating food insecurity, is undergoing an exciting transformation. Effective immediately, the initiative will be rebranded as Hoosier Hogs to Homes, signaling a renewed focus and expanded mission to put more ground pork in food pantries across the state. Since 2009, Indiana pig farmers have donated more than 1.6 million ground pork meals to Hoosiers through this partnership. But we don't want to stop there. “One of our We Care Principles, the standards that guide our pig farmers in their day-to-day operation, is to serve our community in meaningful ways,” said Jeanette Merritt, Indiana Pork's Director of Communication. "By transitioning to Hoosier Hogs to Homes, we’re continuing our commitment to providing ground pork to food pantries across the state.” “We are so thankful to Indiana's pig farmers for their generosity toward continuing this program. Protein is difficult for struggling families to afford, and the ground pork fulfills an important dietary component,” says Emily Weikert Bryant, Executive Director of Feeding Indiana's Hungry. Farmers, community members, and businesses are encouraged to join the Hoosier Hogs to Homes effort through monetary donations or donations of ground pork to your favorite food pantry. For more information on the program’s transformation and ways to get involved, please visit IndianaPork.org or contact Jeanette Merritt at jmerritt@inpork.org.

Buying and eating local food is better for your health and for the health of our community, but it’s not always as easy as a quick run to your nearest grocery store. Right now it’s easier than ever, as Western New York is at the height of our harvest season. Farmer’s markets abound with local food options, and it’s a great way to meet the farmers and producers and ask them how you can shop locally in the off-season. Eat Local WNY offers a number of resources on their website to help you track down local food. It also offers a local food pledge, created to help encourage WNYers to increase their consumption of local food by just 10% this year. To learn more about local food availability, access and benefits, to hear more stories from the local food community, or to take the Eat Local WNY Food Pledge, visit eatlocalwny.org.

My #1 strategy for quality food? Grow it yourself! Nobody cares more about your health than you do! 🥚🐇 At home, we raise chickens, rabbits, bees, geese, and soon cattle and pigs. But if you can’t grow your own, buy local and in-season. When you know your farmer and how they raise animals or grow food, you’re making better choices. Sourcing your food puts control in your hands! #FarmToTable #GrowYourOwnFood #QualityFoods #WholeFoods

The rocketing demand for free range chicken in the UK is magnificent. Another signal that we, as consumers, want meat that not only tastes better, but is produced with care for the animal and the environment. BUT, while most will have an expectation that every free range chicken is grown in the way Will does at Sutton Hoo, the reality is that his methods represent a tiny, tiny fraction of what we produce in the UK. Instead, it is almost all produced in large, static and temperature controlled sheds. While chickens on the edge of these sheds can go outside, the majority stay inside for much of their lives - rarely, if ever, seeing sunlight. Not what you thought? I cannot stress enough - this is not an indictment on the static shed chicken farmer. It would be mad to suggest that their method is on par with a battery cage in terms of its animal husbandry. It is, instead, a reflection of food labelling doing a magnificent jedi mind trick to pacify your guilt without needing to give you true visibility of how your food is produced. Critically, this is not solely the sin of the supermarkets. That is why Herd's chain is built on absolute transparency - not just of the farmer but of the methods they use to produce your food. Will’s chickens are incredible. Short of feed and water, there is no resource other than time that’s used to produce them. We’re going to bring you into every nook and cranny of his process so you can make your own mind up as to whether it meets your standards. My hope is that it will. Drop me a message if you want to come and see it for yourself. www.herdmarket.com #chicken #british #freerange #herd #food #transparency
