This spring, we joined forces with the National Hazard Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI) Converging Design project to create a new paradigm in structural engineering - enhanced earthquake resilience in sustainable building design. Along with our academic and industry researcher partners, we put a six-storey hybrid mass-timber and steel structure through rigorous outdoor shake-table testing at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Outfitted with yield-link brace and moment connections, the structure withstood a series of simulated earthquakes from ground motions recorded during the 1989 Loma-Prieta earthquake, but scaled up to 400% of that intensity. Researchers at the University of Virginia have engineered a graphene-enhanced, 3D-printable concrete that not only exhibits superior strength and durability but also reduces carbon emissions by approximately 31% compared to traditional mixtures. By integrating graphene into a cement blend of limestone and calcined clay (LC2), the team achieved a material that meets the structural demands of modern construction while significantly lessening its environmental footprint. This advancement holds promise for more sustainable building practices, aligning with global efforts to mitigate climate change. The research underscores the potential of innovative materials in revolutionizing construction methodologies, paving the way for eco-friendly infrastructure without compromising on performance.
