Six students from CMU-Africa participated in the recently concluded Applied Machine Learning Days conference that was held in Nairobi, Kenya. Organized by École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne ,the conference spotlighted #Ai applications in healthcare, with a special emphasis on Africa. Here are some reflections. "The AMLD conference provided me with invaluable insights into AI's impact, especially its application in Africa, with a spotlight on the user-centered approach. Exploring healthcare topics was particularly captivating, as it shed light not only on the transformative potential of AI in this field but also emphasized the crucial need to assess AI models for biases and evaluate their capabilities and adoption rates in real-world scenarios. The hands-on session on Geospatial ML Mapping was especially enlightening. I am deeply inspired by this experience and I’m looking forward to leveraging AI and machine learning while prioritizing deep community engagement to ensure impactful outcomes in addressing Africa's challenges." Scovia Achan MS IT'25 Uganda "Attending AMLD Africa was an incredibly inspiring experience. Witnessing diverse individuals from various fields collaborate and share their expertise in using (ML) and (AI) for positive change in Africa was truly eye-opening. Dr. Judy Gichoya's presentation, particularly, resonated deeply with my interest in computer vision. Her talk on leveraging computer vision to unearth hidden signals within medical images highlighted the tangible impact AI can have on improving healthcare outcomes in Africa. This experience solidified my belief in the potential of AI to not only address challenges on the continent but also contribute to its brighter future through technological innovation." AI Learning Second week of lecture and another milestone is to be dropped. You'll love this 😊 I'm to share the aspect of AI’s impact in Africa that has sparked my curiosity There are some impact AI has made in Africa which are: 1. In economy 2. In Agriculture 3. In Healthcare 4. In Education 5. In Creation of Job Opportunities But I would love to talk about its impact on Education. In this present world, AI has helped a lot of students in their learning by improving their learning speed, increasing efficiency, providing continuous access to educational resources, record keeping. Making a research via google can be stressful sometimes because it delivers a lot on information on a particular search but AI gives a direct information on a search. It has also helped students get access to educational materials, questions, resources which are necessary for their area of study. There are many more but I'll stop here. #aice #aiced2024 #alx_ai alx_africa
