Dan Levy’s Post

PBS recently aired the first episode of a two-part series focusing on the efforts to restore the Indian River Lagoon (IRL), a crucial 156-mile estuary on Florida's east coast, which significantly contributes $7.6 billion annually to the local economy. The IRL has been severely impacted by nutrient pollution, leading to harmful algal blooms, fish kills, and extensive seagrass loss. Despite continuous efforts by local and state organizations, these issues persist. In 2023, Brevard County, supported by a grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, collaborated with AECOM to test the effectiveness of our Algae Harvesting and Hydronucleation Flotation Technology (HFT) in aiding the lagoon's restoration. This research successfully treated over 4 million gallons of water, resulting in increased levels of dissolved oxygen, a key factor in the health of aquatic ecosystems. However, while these initial results are promising, further work is necessary to develop a comprehensive restoration plan for the IRL. Stay tuned for further updates on this important environmental initiative. https://lnkd.in/eMu9etQh #aecom AECOM - Environmental Services #algaeharvesting #saveourlagoon #Krystelknowles
