💼 My first "big boy" job was at a local news station. I was 18, the only editor for the weekend show, responsible for getting everything ready on time. Back then, I thought my value was in speed—how quickly I could finish my work. One day, my boss pulled me aside and said something that stuck with me: “I could hire any monkey to push buttons. I hired you to be a storyteller.” 🎥 In that moment, he did two things: he recognized my potential and challenged me to grow. Something clicked—I wanted to be a storyteller, a craftsman. ✨ From then on, I sought opportunities to tell better stories, to add depth and intention to my edits. I started bringing my work to him for feedback, even if I was proud of it, and sometimes that work got torn apart. “As a viewer, what is there to watch? How can they make nothing?” I read an article in the Los Angeles Times and the above quote stuck out to me. The article was titled "Hollywood writers are not ok" and there were many stats, quotes, anecdotes etc about this. I feel for those writers, they are key to the success of Hollywood. Ever wonder why some films from your favorite stars bomb, while others don't?...... However, the comment "what is there to watch" is a part of the problem IMHO. There is plenty to watch, peak TV may be over, but there is so much competition for our attention and it continues to increase. Walk through your neighborhood Starbucks and count how many people are on their phone as opposed to looking at their laptop. If you can shapeshift, do the same thing in people's homes. A couple of years ago the New York Post published some data from Plex, Inc. that stated the average person has 13 TV shows and 16 movies on their watch list, averaging 104 hours. The same survey says 68% of Americans have a "TV show and movie list so long its nearly impossible for them to get through it". When I first left Hollywood, my resume was split in two. One resume for Architecture and another for Media Production. More often then not I would have Architects asking me about my experience in film production. From film editing to story telling. Two resumes formed into one. After years of working in Architecture: Production Design, Art Direction and Set Design seemed a natural progression when I was in Hollywood. Then upon moving back into the San Francisco Bay Area, I went back to working on construction plans for commercial and residential buildings. One day I took a real hard look at my resume. I would have companies default me on the variety of work I had been doing.Then I realized how important all these skills mean in the grand design of my life. Storytelling has been passed down from generation to generation. It is an intrical part of everyone on earth both personally and professionally. From movies, adds, selling any products or business. I don’t know where these numbers come from but it usually breaks down like this every year. 7 out of 10 are animated so why is the industry in the toilet? Is it execs/bean-counters trying to squeeze out as much profitability as possible so even with the golden animation goose they suppress salaries, slash budgets, dump finished productions as tax-write-offs etc. to keep the bottom line looking good? It’s always short-term thinking- why don’t they invest in quality stories that will pay off in the long term as perennial family favorites? So I've freelanced on and off for the past few years, but going forward I'd like to put myself out there more and let folks know that I'm open to more opportunities and working with more editors. My subject matter expertise includes: - Detroit (I mean, hello...) - Black queerness (I have a whole novel about it, and it's in TV development to boot) - Black pop culture - Automotive industry - Urbanism/urban studies - Travel (ok, I'm admittedly light on bylines here, but I'd like to break in here!) ...or just try me out on any subject, really. There isn't a medium I haven't touched; I've done print and digital, newspapers and magazines, live audio and podcasting, TV appearances and documentary shorts.
