Every year without fail, I'll have a few phone calls with clients that are concerned about the safety during gym training. Usually their worry it's always their back. And in their mind they're stressing about squats and deadlifts. The irony here is that correctly performed squats and deadlifts are good for your back. However, in reality the one lift where you DO want to be safety conscious and where there is truly risk if someone does NOT know what they're doing, is the bench press. Most people will avoid "leg day" (squats), but rarely skip the popular bench press. And most are unaware of the few simple tips that de-risk this exercise.

Where you check your girth matters.Studies have showb girth tension peaks behind the elbow and at the sternum. Horses aren't perfectly round, so checking girth tightness at the side can make it seem "loose" and risk over tightening. Always check girth tightness at the sternum or just behind the elbow.
