"Information is the most powerful currency in the modern age. Yet, with the dance world struggling to recover cultural relevance and fiscal health post-pandemic shutdowns, most dance workers, critics, and donors have little concrete knowledge of overall economic conditions. "Two key initiatives are already in progress to combat this: one by Dance/NYC, collecting data from dance industry workers, and the other by the Association of Performing Arts Professionals, to establish an information bank on salary ranges, compensation, and the like. While both are excellent, it’s crucial that more is done. "There is one immediate step with broad impact: real transparency throughout the dance economy. How can dance organizations do that? By making their annual tax returns available." —Elizabeth Yntema, founder and president of Dance Data Project® Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/eNye-uVH

According to this article, local dance companies in the United States are creating successful ecosystems by providing opportunities for local artists and building strong connections with their communities. Companies like Stewart/Owen Dance in Asheville and New Dialect in Nashville are strengthening local dance and offering sustainable job opportunities for artists. These companies aim to build local ecosystems rather than focusing on national fame, and they create a successful and supportive environment by engaging directly with their communities. As a dancer in Turkey, our local dance ecosystem, while showing activity in major cities, is still in a developmental stage. Local communities are often limited to local culture rather than aiming for international success. There is a lack of infrastructure to support local artists and difficulties in creating consistent job opportunities. It is clear that more infrastructure and support are needed for the sustainability of local dance. . . #LocalDance #DanceEcosystem #CommunityBuilding #SustainableOpportunities #DanceArtists #CulturalSupport #DanceInTurkey #InfrastructureForDance #SupportingArtists #DanceDevelopment #LocalCulture #DanceSustainability #EylülErcan #Dance #Dancer

"Dance consulting is a specialized field that offers professional guidance and support to dancers, choreographers, dance companies, and other stakeholders in the dance industry. Dance consultants can help with various aspects of dance production, such as artistic direction, marketing, fundraising, education, outreach, and evaluation. Dance consulting is important because it can enhance the quality, impact, and sustainability of dance projects and careers. Some of the benefits of dance consulting are: - It can provide expertise and experience that may not be available within the dance team or organization. For example, a dance consultant can help a choreographer develop a clear vision and strategy for their work, or advise a dance company on how to reach new audiences and funders. - It can offer fresh perspectives and feedback that can challenge and inspire the dance creators and performers. For example, a dance consultant can offer constructive criticism and suggestions for improvement, or introduce new ideas and approaches that can enrich the dance work. - It can foster collaboration and networking among the dance community and beyond. For example, a dance consultant can facilitate communication and cooperation between different dance groups or genres, or connect the dance project with potential partners and collaborators from other fields and sectors." "The average salary for a Dance Instructor is $33.50 per hour in Washington, DC. Commercial dancers are paid as independent contractors by the producing organization of a project. The average hourly pay for a Dancer in Washington is $16.63 an hour. In general, most dance studio employees are not full-time. This means they are paid by the hour or per class instead of earning an annual salary." https://lnkd.in/g5Qs4YCm #pdc #communication

The Evolution and Impact of Street Hip Hop Dance... I. In the recent popularization of street hip hop dance, elements such as popping, locking, boogaloo, street dance, funk, and bebop capture the public's gaze and seem to paralyze it. This might be because street hip hop dance possesses several particular features that determine the success and empathy it arouses, physiognomically, choreographically, and performatively. This will seek to define what these features consist of, paying particular attention to those who perform them where they most frequently occur. Above all, it will seek to examine the impact street hip hop dance is having on society. What are the origins of street hip hop dance, and where did it come from? In order to understand it and give meaning to it, it is vital to go to the roots of those who created it and began performing it in neighborhoods and on streets as a dance that was adrift from social dissension, protest, and powerlessness. Its creators were African Americans born in the ghettos and suburban slums of the United States; members of groups and families engaged in the daily battle for subsistence; oppressed people in social and economic terms, demeaned in every possible way; exponents of a life without a future, in short. As former slaves, they were seen as ex-slaves of the modern ruling class, living in continuous conditions of poverty and misery for many generations and existing in extreme and marked contrasts, particularly when the majestic skyscrapers of the city gave way to the depopulated periphery and to the characteristic mid-height blocks where they lived in conditions of overcrowding and inhumane sanitation. #gecsebrigitta

Last but certainly not least, our third key issue facing Our New York City Dance: Justice, Equity and Inclusion are Still Lagging The dance workforce still doesn’t reflect NYC demographics with lacking representation from BIPOC, older generation, and disabled dance workers. Many of our dance entities are not implementing justice, equity, inclusion, and access policies and practices (either due to capacity or lack of priority), and among us, those from historically disinvested communities are not adequately resourced or engaged across all levels of the workforce including leadership. Organizations centering BIPOC dance practices have more limited financial resources than genres of ballet, contemporary, and modern. How do we get to just, vibrant & diverse? Consider how we fit into larger systems, how we engage in community and day-to-day, plus urging stakeholders with influence to act. Discover insights in our Issue 3 Primer to understand the data and take action to drive change for Our New York City Dance at https://ow.ly/ZgaU50RC3KO

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐖𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐯𝐞? Our friends from the European Dance Development Network (EDN) are gearing up for an online conference on dance and wellbeing. Korzo is part of EDN, a network of dance development organisations in Europe, cooperating for a sustainable, progressive, and equitable field of contemporary dance. We all know the importance of dance: it builds communities and enhances the overall quality of life. But there’s much to improve when it comes to dance and wellbeing. Dance is still undervalued as an artistic, cultural, and professional practice. Lots of dance professionals make work in precarious conditions, including low wages, lack of job security and much more. And the dance sector is chronically underfunded and overworked. So: a much needed conference on dance and wellbeing. How can we ensure that the principles of care and wellbeing are embedded within the dance sector itself? We’ll be there the 29th of November! A few weeks back at Chisenhale Dance Space we launched an exciting new collab with Dance Art Journal which I'd love to share...! REWRITE is an editorial series platforming artists to challenge dominant histories and shape new futures in the dance and performance sector. Chisenhale Dance Space (CDS) and Dance Art Journal (DAJ) have teamed up to commission a series of opinion pieces which draw on perspectives from across our respective communities. These articles resist contemporary pressures to depoliticise artmaking, and cover a range of topics related to anti-oppressive practices, care, sector politics, and experimental forms of working & creation. Writing has always been a vital way that the ephemeral artforms of dance and performance are framed and remembered. However the pool of people writing these narratives has historically been narrow. As an artist-led organisation (CDS) and grassroots independent media (DAJ), we align with a lineage of outspoken artists, sharing anti-mainstream takes in the studio, after the show, on solo blogs, artist-led magazines, or in the group chat. This series seeks to broadcast these conversations to wider audiences, and influence much needed positive change in the sector we love and exist within. Each article will be available to read for free on the DAJ website. We hope you’ll share your thoughts and add to the dialogue! READ THE FIRST THREE ARTICLES HERE: https://lnkd.in/eBidWWfE
