What will the role of the CEO look like in 2030? Earlier this month we gathered a group of Non-Executive Directors together for dinner and debate to discuss this question, co-hosted by Atif Sheikh, Tom Wooldridge, and our Heidrick & Struggles colleagues Kit Bingham and Alice Breeden. Discussion centred on the skills successful CEOs will need in the next decade, and what’s likely to stay constant around all the change. The conversation brought out some great takeaways which we’ll share in coming weeks, but key points were made around the importance of: 1. Agility in the Board/CEO relationship to drive success in unpredictable markets. 2. CEOs who can prioritise owning a clear, well understood direction for the organisation to cut through the noise that comes with being seen as the ‘Chief Everything Officer’. The Global Think Tank report discovered that “Only 26% of respondents feel that family business boards are sufficiently diverse.” We know that to create long term sustainability within a business, we need to see more diversity in the boardroom. Charlie has a unique take on this topic, as quoted in the report: “I believe that the size of the family business has a bearing on the awareness of the benefit of diverse opinions in the boardroom. Recognition of that belief has a long way to go. In addition, leadership development in certain industry verticals as well as through family generational engagement programmes will need to bear fruit to provide a larger pool of qualified, diverse candidates.” It’s imperative for family business boards to seek new candidates that can offer new perspectives and expertise. Their findings help to understand where boards are on their wider ESG strategy: 🔹 96% 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐒𝐆 in the next 5 years. 🔹 94% 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧 𝐄𝐒𝐆 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐨𝐫 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥 in at least one business area. 🔹 63% said 𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞 to achieving their organizations’ business strategy. 🔹 53% 𝐚𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 in their industry or across industries.
