From 2011 to 2021, the prevalence of electronic health records, or EHRs, in American hospitals increased from 28% to 96%, according to HealthIT.gov. The EHR revolution has significantly transformed healthcare work and the flow of information, but it hasn't come without costs. Can generative AI help? "Artificial Intelligence has the potential to improve every aspect of health care. AI applications can accelerate scientific discovery, help physicians and nurses make better decisions, improve medical advice for patients, and reduce the sometimes-crushing burden of paperwork. But history suggests that the U.S. health sector struggles to put innovations like AI into practice, due in part to what economists call 'switchover disruptions,' the costly phase-in period for new technologies that can upend profitable operations. To reduce switchover disruptions for AI and accelerate adoption, health care innovators must build trust in AI with three critical constituencies: providers, patients, and the public. Many thanks to everyone involved in today's workshop on participatory approaches to AI in healthcare at the 'Health for Democracy, Democracy for Health' conference. We asked the healthcare researchers and professionals present to rank key actors based on their relative importance in the development of AI in healthcare, with the below result: 1. Patient associations 2. Healthcare professional associations and unions 3. Public authorities 4. Technological firms 5. Healthcare training schools 6. Media This is radically different to the current production ecosystem around AI in healthcare developing given the lead by firms and challenges how many dominant actors see who drives innovation, including most governments. On the last day of the "Disrupting Healthcare" Course, participants took center stage with three excellent presentations proposing solutions for professional burnout and medical errors. Congratulations to you all. The journey has been remarkable, filled with insightful discussions, innovative ideas, and outstanding performances. 🚀 I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the participants. Your dedication, hard work, and high performance throughout the course have been truly inspiring. Seeing your growth has been a pleasure, and I wish you all the best in your professional careers. Your future in healthcare looks incredibly bright! 🎤 A special thank you to the guest speakers who shared their insights and experiences. Your contributions have enriched our understanding and provided real-world perspectives crucial for disrupting the healthcare industry. It was great to attend a very informative, thought provoking and well rounded event organised by The Health Foundation yesterday titled ‘AI in the NHS: Shaping the future of health care’. So much rich discussion from a fantastic array of speakers on the opportunities and threats presented by AI, the practical considerations and critical success factors that need to be put into place to ensure AI in healthcare is effective, appropriate but above all safe. My key takeaways: 1. Start with the problem you’re trying to solve rather than trying to find somewhere to implement a tech solution (AI or not). 2. The need for a robust, clear and consistent regulatory framework and the people at all levels of the system to develop, deliver and refine this framework over time. 3. Use of AI in back and middle office functions offer potential quick wins and already there are some good case studies of this in the NHS e.g. using AI to reduce DNA appointments. 4. We need to think about funding models to help drive equity in the digital age which is different to the analogue age and models which foster innovation but keep quality of care front and centre in an area with limited RCT evidence. 5. Involve patients and staff early in the process and make sure the theoretical value one may think can be unlocked by AI or tech more broadly is genuinely what they want and value. 6. There needs to be a workforce strategy to accompany the roll out of AI in the NHS but not one that just focusses on future workforce needs but current workforce needs. How will people become competent and confident in using AI but without running the risk of deskilling key staff who can’t just rely on what the Algorithm says e.g. what impact will there be on use of AI in clinical training? 7. It’s all about people! You can have the best AI and innovative technology in the world but at the end of the day if people don’t trust it or want to use it, it’s pointless. You also need people and resources to deliver all parts of the process from the centre of the NHS to the ground level.
