I don't know how old people think I am, but I was recently asked, "What advice would you give to the younger generation starting a business?" My first instinct was to say, "Don't!" 😆 But let me share why I actually think otherwise. I once mentored a young man keen to start a carpet cleaning business. He was presented with a bank's business plan suggesting he needed £27,000 to begin. After reviewing his situation, it became clear all he really needed was a £2,300 carpet-cleaning machine. He already had a steady contract paying £400 a week, so the large loan was unnecessary. I advised him to start small - just buy the machine and grow organically. He took that advice, and now, a few years later, he operates four vans and employs seven people - all without further loans. This experience reinforced my belief in empowering young entrepreneurs to think critically, plan efficiently, and start modestly, avoiding unnecessary debt and focusing on sustainable growth.
