"It taught me grit; it taught me teamsmanship; it taught me self-reliance." "Herb, it taught me resilience." Those words were spoken to me about the construction industry this morning by a 30+ year veteran of Sargent. I hired him as a laborer in 1992. He talked about his preparedness to meet challenges, both personal and professional -- and how prepared he will be for eventual retirement, 10-15 years away. He has built a LIFE in this industry. And while HE's built a life, I also know he has impacted hundreds of lives during his career, and will continue to do so. That's what this industry CAN mean to people. Let's make sure it DOES mean this to people. Their futures can be changed, and they can change futures. It's a big part of why I love what I do. What advice would you give your younger self? We caught up with Director Mark Hamilton MCIOB and asked him this question. Construction faces the challenge of encouraging young people into the industry. But it can be such a rewarding and fun career! With 30+ years of experience in the industry, Mark has seen and achieved a lot. Here are 10 things he'd tell a younger Mark embarking on his construction career. What else would you include?

🛠️ When you work in an industry for decades, it's easy to imagine how you would run things if you were in charge, how you would treat your employees and what values you would prioritize. It was awesome to chat with Chris Heesterman and Andrew Fettback and hear about how they got the opportunity to do exactly that. Both spent 20 years in the electrical contracting space and have used that experience to shape their own company, Fettback & Heesterman. Here are some of their key strategies: 💡 Horizontal structure: They spoke about including their team in decision making and listening to feedback. 💡 Field first: The pair always wnats to stay connected with workers on the tools and ensuring they have everything they need to succeed. 💡 Intelligent growth: Fettback & Heesterman have no problem saying "no" to jobs they can't crush or that won't turn a profit. They are interested in healthy growth, not just growth for growth's sake. Congrats, guys! Looking forward to seeing what the future holds ⚡

Beyond move-in, we'll set our sights on Phase 2: "Homes for Good is in the process of procuring the 20 Manufactured/Modular homes and once purchased will be working closely with OHCS, Lane County, and assigned case managers to work with individuals and families that were displaced by the Holiday Farm Fire to connect them to this housing opportunity. The project will address inequitable access to high quality housing in low-income rural communities and community revitalization post disaster."
