LNG imports are struggling to make inroads in Central and Southeastern Europe as plentiful and cheap Russian piped supplies hamper the region’s diversification efforts. While regional gas importers have indicated interest in entering long-term LNG supply contracts, so far little progress has been made in firming up those talks into binding agreements, with insufficient pipeline capacity and high spot LNG prices presenting a major hurdle for buyers. An interesting trend shaping up in Turkey's Russian gas imports since the start of 2024. Long-term pipeline imports are decreasing, while spot offtakes have nearly tripled on the same period last year and exceeding monthly LTC volumes. If we also add another 100mcm of Russian LNG reaching Turkish ports and another 100mcm possibly of Russian origin trans-shipped via France each month, Turkey has been importing ~3bcm of Russian gas + LNG each month since the start of the year, more than at any point since the regulator #EPDK started publishing monthly gas reports ten years ago.
