Cutting edge research makes the world go round After getting inspired by Jason Haddix's ISSA Denver Chapter presentation on how gen AI can be used for cybersecurity, I've been doing a lot of digging and found two outstanding papers on that topic: ✔ First was "From ChatGPT to ThreatGPT: Impact of Generative AI in Cybersecurity and Privacy" (https://lnkd.in/gBrKY7uF). Maanak Gupta, Ph.D. and team found 23 (!) use cases for generative AI and cybersecurity, ranging from attacking ChatGPT itself, to using it to run offensive and defensive campaigns ✔ Next up, "Digital Sentinels and Antagonists: The Dual Nature of Chatbots in Cybersecurity" (https://lnkd.in/gDYVRH88). Hannah Smzurlo and Zahid Akhtar mapped the progress of AI language models from the 1940s through the present. What's more, they talked about the value that each new generation of models brought. Reading their timeline made it easy to track how generative AI hit a tipping point and went from a novelty to a force to be reckoned with. ➡ While it's not a paper, shout out to Fabrice Rasir for his "Digital Sentinel" artwork (https://lnkd.in/gPrwZeH7). Just as cybersecurity is being transformed by AI, so is the art world and Fabrice Rasir is an AI artist to watch #breakingintocybersecurity #generativeai #blueteam #threatintelligence

📹 Deepfake is another creation of AI that invites potential #cybercriminals to misuse images, video, and audio to their benefit, making it a struggle to differentiate between fake and confirmed speakers. 🤖 These images and audio are created by combining #artificialintelligence and machine learning algorithms. They assist in replacing an individual’s vocals and facial features with that of another person, giving birth to an entirely new identity. 🧧 The innovation is strikingly uncanny, making it challenging to differentiate between the original person and the one impersonating them. This video just opens the door into a much deeper conversation. AI and automation are powerful tools and processes. They can and already do benefit society today. Like anything, it all depends on how they are used. In this new series of videos we will explore the most basic to some of the more complex scenarios of AI being used for negative purposes. What happens when Hackers have AI as an ally (not just a toolset)? What happens if internal AI is poisoned with negative data sources and/or ethics? What can AI do to find weaknesses in our defences and stay hidden? As per the video - I call on the Community to work together and share their experiences on this vast topic as only together can we find the appropriate way forward. More to come - let's keep this conversation going!

What kind of skills are humans going to need to make use of AI? Does AI pose a threat to these skills? If so, what can be done to make AI sustainable and protect it and others from itself? This is what Greg Smith, Michael Papadopoulos, and I explore in this article, published today. Thoughts and responses very welcome :-) A few of you fed into this, knowingly or unknowingly. A post from Harry McLaren on here a while back about automation in cybersecurity started me on this line of thinking. Conversations with Thomas Byrnes were informative. And our colleagues Oliver Turnbull and Eric Piancastelli gave valuable feedback. Thanks all! https://lnkd.in/epCCVD-k #AI #Skill #Expertise #Work

I wrote about the security risks posed by data poisoning attacks against powerful generative AI systems like ChatGPT for The Wall Street Journal. As these AI models are trained on vast datasets scraped from the open internet, researchers warn they could be susceptible to hackers injecting malicious or misleading data that causes the AI to spread misinformation, reveal sensitive info, or take other harmful actions (that does not include poisoning a robot's soup, but I love the article's art). Here's the gift link to the story: https://lnkd.in/eG4ahG98
