As you know connecting all students to successful pathways - and ensuring students are lifelong learners is a major passion of mine, which is why I was thrilled to attend The College Board's #CBForum24. It was an incredible conference filled with such knowledgeable people doing incredible things in the field. While I was there, I had the opportunity to speak with WorkingNation Ramona Schindelheim for #WorkingNationOverheard – and we had a great discussion about the importance of post-secondary learning. As I told Ramona, “learning doesn't end the day we walk across the stage.” Take a look and let me know what you think in the comments section

The talent acquisition space is filled with innovation - but this one is next level. Cornell University's Restorative Record is an example of walking the talk when it comes to removing barriers to employment and building inclusive work environments. I hope to see this adopted across the higher ed landscape and beyond. #recruiting #talentpipelines #talentsourcing #DEIB, #HR #recruiter, #CHRO, #talentacquisition #recruitingtech #HRtech #innovation
Today I had the pleasure of working with these visionaries to share Cornell’s exciting launch of the Restorative Record and the value of more inclusive hiring strategies for justice impacted individuals. https://lnkd.in/gPBksETQ. Going live at Cornell in January 2025 https://lnkd.in/giZey6Ga

I was in the first integrated middle school class in Howard County, MD. -- literally 10 years after Brown v. Board of Education. Contrary to popular belief, integration was a gradual and often halting process. You may remember the words in the SCOTUS decision "with all deliberate speed". Public school integration gave rise to private so-called Christian schools to stem the tide of racial reconciliation. After middle school, my parents enrolled me in a predominantly Jewish school, where racism was not as keenly evident. Despite the initial progress made in desegregating schools following Brown, we have seen a steady reversal in recent decades, with schools becoming increasingly segregated once again along racial and socioeconomic lines. The data is stark. This resegregation is not a natural or inevitable phenomenon, but rather the result of specific policies and practices, including the dismantling of court-ordered desegregation plans, discriminatory housing policies that reinforce racial divides, disinvestment in federal programs supporting integration, and legal decisions limiting strategies for fostering diversity. As the UCLA Civil Rights Project warns, we are "betting our educational and social future on inaction" when decades of research shows the immense benefits of integrated schools for all students. The undoing of Brown's promise and the resegregation of American schools is an ominous development that perpetuates racial and socioeconomic inequalities. It demands urgent attention and concerted efforts from policymakers and society to reverse this damaging trend and uphold the ideal of public education as a great equalizer.
70 years ago today, Thurgood Marshall's leadership in Brown v. Board set a precedent for justice, paved the way for desegregation in public spaces, and laid the groundwork for equal educational opportunities for all. Education has a transformative power, and I'm proud that our Administration has made historic investments in public education that will resonate for generations. Every child in Maryland, regardless of zip code or background, deserves a pathway to a brighter future. Photo Credit: Bettman/Corbis photo courtesy of the Library of Congress.

We are back, baby! And we're stoked to invite you all to the FOURTH season of Racial Justice Weavings. These weekly gatherings are for outdoor education and recreation professionals from any school, company, or organization, in any role. First-timers and old-timers all welcome and encouraged! If you are seeking support for: processing your summer or fall season with a racial justice lens, racial justice work you're doing in your own family or workplace, or your personal liberation practice, join us. We're here to do it in community. Logistics: - Wednesday evenings on Zoom, 6-8pm MST - September 4 - December 11, 2024 (with a few breaks in there) - Sliding scale pricing and we will not let cost be a barrier to anyone participating. In September 2020, we (Steph and Ella) began hosting a weekly space for our fellow backpacking and climbing instructors to talk about white supremacy, racism, and racial justice in outdoor education. The Racial Justice Weavings - "Weavings" - were named to place this gathering within its context: a long history and future of racial justice advocacy in outdoor spaces and education. The goal was to foster antiracist culture in our outdoor leadership school through collective learning and relationship-building. This relational, culture-shifting work is slow but it is powerful. We have learned and grown a lot together in the last four years, and we’re eager to keep building and deepening with the next cohort. Message info@greenwoodandduff.com to sign up.

We know first-hand what is most important and needed for students who look like us: in our classrooms, in our policies, and in our communities. EdLoC member, 2023 Boulder Fund Recipient, and CEO and Founder of Diversity in Leadership Institute Dr. Laura M. recently shared a piece on EdSource advocating for continued investment in teacher diversity recruitment and retention. Amid fiscal challenges in California's education system, the need for diverse representation in classrooms remains paramount. Research shows students thrive when taught by educators who reflect their backgrounds. It's time for school districts to prioritize teacher diversity to ensure all students feel seen and supported. As we commend the local and state initiatives driving teacher diversity, transparency, and community engagement remain crucial for sustained progress. Fiscal uncertainties shouldn't deter leaders from upholding commitments to teacher diversity. Continued investment in these efforts is vital for building a brighter future for California's diverse student population.
