As the conflict continues in Sudan, over 24.8 million people are in urgent need of basic services such as food, water, health, and shelter. By October 2024, 80% of hospitals in conflict-affected areas have become non-functional, with the remaining facilities overwhelmed by people seeking care. Despite International Humanitarian Law, healthcare continues to be a target, further exposing Sudan’s population to critical health threats, including malnutrition, infectious diseases, and mental health challenges. In response, the European Union-funded ‘PROTECT Phase II’ project, implemented by the Sudanese Red Crescent Society with support from the Danish Red Cross, is working to assist vulnerable communities, including migrants and internally displaced people, by improving access to healthcare and essential services. A recent Memorandum of Understanding between the Sudanese Red Crescent and the Ministry of Health ensures that migrants will now have equal access to healthcare alongside the general population. Under this partnership, four health facilities in Northern State, Red Sea, and River Nile will receive medical supplies for six months, ensuring continuity of care through emergency primary and specialized health services at Humanitarian Service Points. This initiative strengthens local health systems and contributes to a more resilient healthcare infrastructure that can endure the challenges of Sudan’s ongoing crisis, ensuring a healthier future for the most affected populations.

🚨 Spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, Dr. Ashraf Al-Qidra: — During 150 days of the ongoing "israeli" aggression: 1. "Israeli" occupation forces killed 364 health personnel and detained 269 others, including hospital directors in Khan Younis and North Gaza. 2. "Israeli" occupation forces destroyed 155 health facilities and put out of service 32 hospitals and 53 health centers. 3. "Israeli" occupation forces targeted 126 ambulances to put them out of service. 4. "Israeli" occupation forces destroyed the infrastructure of hospitals in Khan Younis and North Gaza and converted them into medical points. 5. The health situation is extremely catastrophic and indescribable, worsening and collapsing due to the lack of necessary medical aid. 6. The "israeli" occupation deliberately caused an indescribable humanitarian and health disaster, contributing to the spread of epidemics and infectious diseases. 7. We have recorded about one million cases of infectious diseases without the necessary medical capabilities to treat them. 8. Residents of North Gaza are struggling with death due to a famine that exceeded any global levels, caused by the scarcity of drinking water and the lack of food, resulting in the deaths of dozens of children, women, and the elderly to date. 9. We demand the United Nations to activate international humanitarian law to protect civilians, institutions, and health teams. 10. We demand the United Nations to provide means of survival for the residents of the Gaza Strip to prevent a humanitarian disaster.

Publication alert- in this viewpoint in #lancetglobalhealth, we call to rethink Sudan's current humanitarian response through a #pro_resilience and #people_centred approach. A #pro_resilience approach prioritises investments in national systems and institutions capable of delivering aid and anticipates, prevents, mitigates, and manages imminent and simultaneous shocks. A #people_centred humanitarian response involves meaningful engagement of #communities and collaborations with #civil_society organisations, which continue to be the key #responders to the ongoing conflict in #Sudan. We propose approaches to effectively operationalise #health_system_resilience to enhance immediate and long-term health outcomes, drawing on the #health_sytem_resilience framework by Prof Karl Blanchet . Thank you Dell Saulnier, PhD and Prof Karl Blanchet. ⬇️

Of the over 500,000 people who have fled the conflict in Lebanon into Syria, 7,800 have crossed into northwest Syria. Many have returned with no choice but survival, having been displaced multiple times and forced to restart their lives. This is putting immense pressure on an already fragile health sector, increasing the demand for health services and psychosocial support. We urge our partners and the international community to continue supporting Syria, particularly northwest Syria, to ensure we can meet the growing health needs and provide lifesaving care. Read the strong statement by United Nations OCHA for Syria spotlighting the urgent need for funding.

From Middle East Eye: A letter written by experts and published in the British medical journal, the Lancet, estimates that the actual death toll of Palestinians killed in Gaza could exceed 186,000. The official death toll of Palestinians killed since Israel’s war on Gaza began in October is 38,153, according to Gaza's health ministry. However, the letter emphasised that this figure is likely a dramatic underestimate and does not account for the thousands of people buried under the rubble or for the mounting "indirect" deaths as a result of Israel's destruction of Gaza's food distribution, healthcare and sanitation systems. "The total death toll is expected to be large given the intensity of this conflict; destroyed health-care infrastructure; severe shortages of food, water, and shelter; the population’s inability to flee to safe places; and the loss of funding to UNRWA, one of the very few humanitarian organizations still active in the Gaza Strip," the letter said. The letter estimated that the number of bodies still buried in the rubble is likely to exceed 10,000, as 35 percent of Gaza’ buildings have been destroyed, according to UN data. Citing the transparency watchdog Airwars, which conducts detailed investigations of incidents of civilian harm in areas of conflict, the names of identifiable victims are often omitted from the ministry’s fatalities lists. It added that data collection is becoming increasingly difficult for the Gaza health ministry. The destruction of much of the strip's infrastructure means it is having to rely on information from media sources and first responders to update its figures. "This change has inevitably degraded the detailed data recorded previously," the letter said, adding that the ministry now reports separately the number of unidentified bodies among the total death toll. The letter urged for an immediate ceasefire and the distribution of humanitarian aid in the strip. It also emphasised the need to accurately record "the scale and nature of suffering" in Gaza. "Documenting the true scale is crucial for ensuring historical accountability and acknowledging the full cost of the war. It is also a legal requirement," it said. #GazaGenocide

IRC Ukraine has just published “Ukraine Multisectoral Needs Assessment Report” that highlights critical needs from January, 2024. Health, food, and household items are on the top of priority list. Regarding Health, chronic and communicable diseases are prevalent, especially in rural areas. Provision of Mental Health support is crucial, addressing stress, anxiety, and family issues exacerbated by conflict and previous pandemic period. Still, access to medical services is limited, with gaps in diagnostics, specialist care, and medication availability across many regions, most significantly in Donetsk, Kharkiv, and Mykolaiv. Continuous humanitarian support is needed to strengthen the healthcare system and support the ones in need. #ukraine #healthcare #humanitarianneeds #mentalhealth #support https://lnkd.in/eWZRduH4

The Forgotten War The ongoing conflict in Sudan has precipitated a catastrophic humanitarian crisis in South Darfur, with devastating consequences for maternal and child health. Doctors Without Borders reports an alarming surge in maternal deaths, with 114 recorded between January and mid-August 2024. The situation is particularly dire in medical facilities, where sepsis has emerged as the leading cause of death. Malnutrition among children has reached emergency levels, with nearly 33% of children under two acutely malnourished and 8.1% severely malnourished. The breakdown of healthcare infrastructure has led to preventable deaths, as pregnant women struggle to access timely medical care due to high transportation costs and a shortage of functioning facilities. The United Nations' withdrawal from the region has exacerbated the crisis, leaving a significant gap in humanitarian assistance. With Sudan facing the world's largest humanitarian crisis, urgent international action is imperative to prevent further loss of life and alleviate the suffering of millions. The situation in South Darfur serves as a stark reminder of the devastating human cost of prolonged conflict and neglect United Nations UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) International Committee of the Red Cross - ICRC #darfur #forgottenwar #un
