For all HR Leaders in 2024… This year I have spoken with hundreds of HR Leaders across New Zealand to introduce our proactive human + digital support platform designed to improve overall employee wellbeing. As we near the end of the year, I want to take a moment to acknowledge and recognise the HR professionals who I speak with every day, who often don’t get the spotlight they deserve. 2024 has been a challenging year for many industries, and HR teams have been at the forefront of these challenges. From navigating people changes to managing redundancies, these leaders have had to make incredibly tough decisions while balancing the wellbeing of their people. What many don’t see is the emotional toll this takes. HR leaders are often the unsung heroes of an organisation—people who deeply care about others, yet are tasked with implementing changes that can profoundly impact lives. They are the ones holding the space for others, ensuring transparency and compassion, and supporting the business while shouldering the weight of these decisions. To every HR professional who has stayed up late worrying about their teams, who has had the courage to lead difficult conversations with empathy, and who continues to put people at the centre of their work, thank you. Your efforts may not always be visible, but they are deeply valued and make a lasting difference. As we look to 2025, I hope you find time to recharge, reflect, and recognise the incredible impact you’ve had this year. Let’s also continue to create spaces where HR leaders feel supported and appreciated for the work they do. #Unsungheros #ThanksHR #Recognitionyoudeserve

🔹 HR in the Changing Workplace: Balancing Wellbeing and Performance 🔹 Over the past few years, HR professionals have seen their roles evolve from old-school administrative Personnel to People Experience experts. During the pandemic, we prioritised well-being and compassion. Now, amid a cost-of-living crisis, global tensions and rising financial pressures, the focus has shifted to performance, leaving HR balancing people-centric culture with relentless business demands. I believe that HR is still in the process of pupating. But, what should emerge from the chrysalis? The tension of what HR was and now needs to be is a key theme for tonight’s London HR Connection panel debate, “The Future of the Chief People Officer’s Role”, led by Adam Oliver of Middlemore. Change is required. The CIPHR 2023 survey revealed that 56% of HR professionals considered leaving their roles last year. Ironically, those tasked with fostering motivation and engagement feel increasingly demotivated themselves. Katie Jacobs’ People Management magazine article highlights the unsustainable pressures HR faces supporting managers who are suffering the same squeeze. Key Reasons HR Professionals Are Leaving: WORKLOAD and BURNOUT: 43% cited this as a primary concern. HR is stretched thin managing wellbeing initiatives for others while facing mounting pressures. STALLED CAREER DEVELOPMENT: 38% noted limited growth opportunities, despite creating progression pathways for others. COMPENSATION & RECOGNITION: Nearly 30% reported dissatisfaction with pay, highlighting a disconnect in their role as architects of reward systems. CULTURE & VALUES MISMATCH: 24% felt organisational values didn’t align with their own, eroding morale. LACK of FLEXIBILITY: 27% pointed to poor work-life balance, despite HR driving flexible policies for others. 💡 The Way Forward To retain HR talent, organisations must: Ensure fair pay and genuine recognition. Invest in career progression and skills development. Promote work-life balance. Foster cultures that reflect the values that HR champions. Partner with HR, rather than involving it as an afterthought, (to date this happens all too often with HR tasked to clear up the mess). Good HR is and should be at the center of a business, helping to determine and drive strategy, motivating people to be and give of their best. Clarity is needed in all organisations as to what HR's role is to ensure that desired outcomes are achieved - I am looking forward to the insights provided tonight. #FutureOfWork #HRLeadership #WorkplaceCulture #PeopleStrategy #Retention

And that my friend is what is wrong with the business world. Everyone is doing the same thing, engagement, DEI, wellbeing, EVP bla bla yet, talk about the same problem persisting in all of their organisations. How does it make sense??? Have the balls to do things differently because it seems whatever we are doing is not working otherwise we would have moved away from certain HR agendas/problems to new ones. Think about this, would you pay to solve the same problem for 3 decades? This is what is happening with the engagement nonsense for example. Maybe it is time to look at things differently. If you keep doing what everyone else is doing you will keep having the same problem as everyone else. It is quite simple. #engagement #hr

Following on from last week's post on human-centered HR, I wanted to share more about this today. There’s a significant shift towards human-centric HR practices. Organisations are increasingly viewing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and employee wellbeing as strategic imperatives rather than mere compliance measures. This approach is essential for enhancing employee satisfaction and driving business success. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) DEI initiatives are now central to HR strategies, creating a culture where every employee feels valued and included. Companies are adopting structured DEI programs, promoting diverse hiring practices, and providing ongoing training to reduce unconscious biases. Research shows that diverse teams are more innovative and perform better, directly benefiting the company's bottom line. Employee Wellbeing There is a growing emphasis on comprehensive wellbeing programmes that address mental, physical, and financial health. Organisations are introducing flexible work arrangements, mental health support, and initiatives to promote a healthy work-life balance. These initiatives boost employee morale, reduce turnover, and enhance productivity and creativity. By prioritising DEI and wellbeing, organisations create an inclusive environment where employees can thrive, leading to sustained business growth and success. Is your organisation ready to embrace human-centric HR practices? Let’s connect to explore how we can enhance your HR strategy. #HumanCentricHR #DEI #EmployeeWellbeing #Leadership #BusinessGrowth
