Someone told me that if a book doesn't become a bestseller, it cannot be good by definition. Well, sadly the publishing world is not a meritocracy. Publishers do not invest into marketing most books they put out, and many will not even appear on shelves - to say nothing of indie publishing. No, becoming a bestselling author and becoming a good author are not the same thing. Many of the greatest authors, composers, painters and so on are not even known about in their time, and a chunk of those who were got famous for other reasons. On the other hand, bestsellers are well targeted, funded and distributed books that are easy to consume, but don't necessarily have staying power. Always be objective about your work, and what you are trying to accomplish. There is no shame in never having sold a single copy, and nor should you idolise anyone just because they have sold a million. Hell, most of the bad and self-contradictory advice on writing out there comes from bestselling authors, who a lot of the time don't realise how much luck and trends played a part in their success, thinking their words are magic, and people believing them because of their status. This is not healthy, for us or literature as a whole. Let's start applying some uncommon sense.

It's a cruel joke that often those with the greatest talent will be unknown in their time, and even more cruel that they would doubt themselves for failing to be published; or, if published, unsuccessful. All while the mediocre (or outright bad) is acclaimed and praised.

Somehow your posts show up right when I need to see/hear them. It's easy to get caught in this sort of comparison trap with other authors. You're right, though. Often luck is an important part in their success, as with anyone's.

Quality isn't defined by popularity. Bestsellers often rely on marketing, not merit. Don't idolize sales figures; focus on craft.

What is a “good author”? Morally good? Good writer? Shows up on time for readings and book signings? I have soooo many questions.

As an indie author myself, I derive satisfaction in what I write and a personal sense of achievement at having tried instead of just dreaming it. Personal worth is found in growing out of our comfort zone and attempting things outside our norm or circles. I was an engineer for 30+ years but decided to call it quit and pursue my passion of writing. Never look back ever since... ;)

So well put. Being a bestseller is not a parameter for your creativity. Please rise above it:)
