Concerns Regarding the Proposed Kawana Indoor Sports Stadium As a concerned citizen, I recently attended a meeting with the council to discuss the proposal for the indoor sports stadium in the Kawana Sports Precinct. However, the meeting fell short of expectations, serving more as a public relations exercise than a genuine effort to address community concerns. Key points raised during the meeting include: The foundations for the proposed location were laid around 2015, with stakeholders allegedly informed in a 2021 meeting under a confidentiality agreement. The Kawana Juniors were presented with limited options, essentially being forced to choose the lesser of two unfavorable alternatives. Alternative venue suggestions were dismissed by council officers without thorough consideration. Questions remain regarding the cost estimates, potential land repurposing, and the fate of adjacent industrial areas. To move forward constructively, I urge the council to address the following questions: Is the proposed Kawana Precinct location truly $100 million cheaper than the Maroochydore alternative? Have recent cost estimates considered the significant increase in building expenses since 2021? Could a portion of the 10-hectare precinct be repurposed for sporting fields post-Olympics? What are the plans for the industrial areas north of the precinct? How would the refusal of sporting clubs to relocate impact the project? Is there a deadline for all users to vacate the area by the end of 2028? Has the council explored funding options for alternative sporting facilities, such as lighting up fields at Kawana State College? It's imperative that the council engages in transparent and collaborative decision-making, considering the concerns of the community and exploring viable alternatives that preserve green spaces and existing sporting facilities. I encourage fellow citizens to voice their opinions through local representatives and community groups. Let's advocate for a solution that meets the needs of both the community and the proposed project, ensuring a positive legacy for generations to come.

Oxford United Football Club’s new stadium moves a step closer Oxford United has signed a legally binding lease option with Oxfordshire County Council for land known as The Triangle, as well as completing a community collaboration agreement. The EFL (English Football League) League One club said it follows the news last month that heads of terms had been agreed following detailed negotiations. The completion of the contracts represents a significant step forward in securing Oxford United a long-term home in the county and the future of the 131-year-old football club. Earlier this year an application was submitted to build a new, modern, eco-friendly, 16,000-capacity stadium. The club will be able to fully exercise the 250-year lease once planning permission has been obtained from Cherwell District Council for the development. The lease option agreement includes provisions to ensure Oxford United’s right to play at the stadium is secured, along with safeguards on rent and use of facilities. The community collaboration agreement formalises the club’s commitment to social, environmental and economic benefits for the community, as outlined in the seven strategic priorities set by the council. The strategic priorities include improving public transport and achieving a net-zero development. Oxford United has also committed to the production of a Net Zero Plan in line with the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework. I called for critical transport infrastructure rather than ‘white elephant’ venues in my 100-Day Review submission to the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority’s (GIICA) 100 Day Review of Games. As Mayor of Ipswich and a Board Director of both the Council of Mayors (SEQ) and the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee, I believe transport is the most impactful legacy the Games could deliver for our region. We have been fortunate to date to be a co-host city for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games with Brighton Homes Arena included in the Games masterplan. We hope to remain a co-host city with Brighton Homes Arena able to support to the delivery of a more cost-effective Brisbane Games. Hosting the modern pentathlon, Brighton Homes Arena requires no further investment and it would also make an ideal venue for any future 2032 Games sports requiring an oval stadium. Originally considered in the 2032 Games Feasibility Study, The North Ipswich Sport and Entertainment Precinct (North Ipswich Reserve) should be given consideration in the review as it would be suitable venue for a football preliminary round. It is supported by existing and planned hotel accommodation within the Ipswich Central precinct and its close proximity to Ipswich train station and Council’s $300 million newly redeveloped Nicholas Street Precinct and dedicated undercover car park. The Reserve should be considered again as it since had a $40 million injection of funding from all three levels of government, for upgrades. Linking these two sporting facilities simplifying movement between the venues, is also in line with Ipswich’s greatest need for transport legacy, the Ipswich to Springfield Central Public Transport Corridor. This Transport Corridor solution would close the loop between Ipswich Central and Springfield Central with nine potential stations in areas experiencing rapid growth. Other projects that would be worthy of legacy investment would include the proposed Ipswich Convention and Exhibition Centre, a tartan running track, an indoor sports stadium and a sport and entertainment precinct in Springfield Central. My submission encourages the GIICA Board to consider how we can realign our current Games planning with the Council of Mayors (SEQ) original proposal from 2015. They were able to foster strong community support for the concept based on its ability to boost transport investment, to cater for the region’s significant population growth and hopefully this new review can get back to those roots and recapture community support.

In a move to transform downtown Washington, DC’s government has unveiled plans to purchase Capital One Arena for $87.5 million as part of a larger $515 million investment in the city’s entertainment district. The deal would ensure the Washington Capitals and Wizards remain in the nation’s capital through at least 2050. “We’re keeping Washington’s teams where they belong – here in the Sports Capital, and we’re doubling down on having a world-class destination and entertainment district in the center of DC,” Mayor Muriel Bowser announced, emphasizing the project’s significance beyond sports. “We know that when our Downtown does well, our city does well.” The comprehensive agreement includes an innovative lease-back arrangement, where Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE), after selling the arena to the District, would lease it back for $1.3 to $2.5 million annually. The deal includes options that could extend the teams’ presence for an additional twenty years beyond 2050. Ted Leonsis, CEO of MSE, outlined an ambitious vision for the facility: “Our vision for a wholly re-imagined sports and entertainment destination will be ambitious, reflective of our community, and designed to ‘wow’ our most ardent supporters as well as casual fans.” The project’s economic impact extends beyond the arena itself. Officials project it will create approximately 4,900 construction jobs and generate over $1 billion in economic activity. The agreement mandates a minimum 35% participation from Certified Business Enterprises (CBE), with aspirations to reach 50%. Read more

𝗦𝘁 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗖𝗘𝗢 – 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗟𝘂𝗱𝗼 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗯𝗮𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲: 🤩 Kevin Georgel, chief executive of St Austell Brewery, has said the new funding secured for Ludo Sports Bar & Kitchen – its joint venture with Ed Martin and the senior team at ETM Group – will help it scale the concept at pace. As reported by Propel, the joint venture has secured £6m of new funding from HSBC UK to grow its Ludo portfolio by five additional sites, with the first of these – a 400-capacity site – set to open later this month, in the Guildhall shopping centre in Exeter. The venue will become the second Ludo location in the south west, following the opening of Ludo, Bath in May 2023. Georgel said: “Having quickly become one of the go-to places for live sport in Bath, the first site of its kind has been a great proof of concept for us. Exeter boasts a thriving sports scene and we're sure the latest opening will quickly establish itself in the city as a premium, high-energy location for fans to unite. In partnership with Ed Martin and his team we have big ambitions for the Ludo brand. Securing the £6m of new funding from HSBC UK will allow us to scale at pace, and bring the premium sports bar concept to more locations across the south and south west.” Martin said: “It's always been our intention to expand our premium sports bar business in new markets outside of London. The proven success of Ludo has driven our vision; the site delivered revenue of close to £2m during its first 12 months of trading. Seeing the premises packed out on match days, fight nights and finals is really quite something – Bath versus Northampton (rugby) and the Tyson Fury versus Alexander Usyk fight (boxing) on Saturday, 18 May 2024 secured us a record day; and the Euros final was nothing less than electrifying. We can't wait to create these memorable experiences to even more sports fans across the West Country – and elsewhere.”

Locals claim to be sidelined in N$60m stadium tender: The Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service is facing allegations of excluding potential local bidders from the tender process for the lead consultant for the Independence Stadium renovation in Windhoek. The consultancy job is estimated to be worth around N$60 million. The government reporterdly changed the requirements to bid for the tender from N$200 million to N$500 million. This is the amount a company had to be worth to qualify as a bidder. The renovation of the stadium, estimated to cost between N$500 million and N$800 million, has attracted attention, including complaints from vice president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah. Nandi-Ndaitwah blasted sport minister Agnes Tjongarero last weekend for not making progress on the renovation of stadiums. Nandi-Ndaitwah lashes out at minister’s failure to renovate stadium The lack of upgrades to Independence Stadium has forced the national football team to play abroad for their international games for four years. The ministry advertised the consultancy tender to design the stadium in September 2023. That bid allegedly attracted many companies, but the process was scrapped. The tender was readvertised for the second time in July this year, and the requirement was then changed from N$200 million to N$500 million. Some local companies pointed to this as an example of how the sport ministry prevented a lot of local companies from competing for the consultancy job. The ministry is administratively led by executive director Erastus Haitangela. “This process is meant to eliminate competition and sideline local companies from participating,” a bidder told The Namibian yesterday. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah Agnes Tjongarero THE SHORTLIST The description of the tender is for “the selection of the lead consultant and other consultancy services (architectural, engineering and quantity surveying required for feasibility study, design, tender documentation, contract administration and site supervision for the alteration and upgrade of Independence Stadium to Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards”. Documents seen by The Namibian show that Marley Tjitjo Architects Inc, which was responsible for the construction of the controversial N$1-billion home affairs building in Windhoek, is one of the two shortlisted companies for the consultancy job. The other shortlisted company is Kerry McNamara Architects, which partnered with businessman Toivo Nuugulu. Tjongarero yesterday said she was not aware of the concerns around the tender. Sport ministry heeds VP’s call on stadium renovations “I just arrived from the airport. I was in France for the Paralympics. The best person to know is the executive director. I am only getting to know all the many things that were happening. “Call me tomorrow if you don’t reach him as I still have to catch up,” she…
