The defining moment in my career happened in early 2004 💼 💼 I was working for John Lewis & Partners as a selling Department Manager, and the Managing Director of John Lewis Southampton asked me to step away from my selling role to join the HR team. 💼 Back then it was called Staff Office, these were very different times! 💼 I had been hoping to move to a particular selling department, in fact I was convinced that's why my MD wanted to talk to me. I think he knew, and on reflection I'm convinced he knew I might not be too keen on a role in Staff Office. 💼 I was professional and listened to his request, of course I said yes, these were the early days of my career and ultimately I was (and continue to be) driven by helping others achieve collective goals for the success of the team. I've always loved understanding my role in the big picture, and he knew how to paint that picture, engaging and motivating me to be my very best. ⭐ Little did I know this would be the most significant moment in my career, as over the weeks, months and years that followed I discovered my calling. ⭐ Indulging briefly in my memories of John Lewis, I worked with some of the most inspirational and hard working people, and I am fortunate to now call many of them friends. Claire Dunkason thank you for that first opportunity to be part of your team, I have zero regrets and am grateful for the huge learning opportunities that came with our time in Staff Office, and of course the fun. Today on International HR Day, I am celebrating; 🎉 the opportunity that presented itself to me 20 years ago 🎉 saying YES 🎉 the fabulous people I had the opportunity to work with and learn from at JL ⭐ You never know what is around the corner, and how one seemingly small decision can have such a powerful impact on you and those around you for days and years to come. ⭐ So, as I continue to shape my own future in HR with The Best Version I encourage you to be open and brave to the opportunities that are ahead of you, to trust your instincts and be true to the best version of you. Thoughts part 4. Teamwork truly makes the dream work. Reflecting on my journey in logistics, I've had the privilege of collaborating with exceptional teams. Like sports teams, the dynamics of these teams evolved with each new member joining or leaving. One standout team operated from 2013 to 2015, comprising a relatable salesman, two driven coordinators, and myself overseeing operations. It was incredibly smooth sailing, with defined roles and responsibilities playing a vital role in our success. The key lesson learned was the importance of clear responsibilities. As my team wisely pointed out, "if we are all responsible for everything, no one will be responsible for anything." This insight laid the groundwork for our growth, propelling the company's success tenfold in the following six years. Successful teams share common traits: - Defined roles and Responsibilities - Leveraging individual strengths - Strong work ethic - Attainable incentives - Trust among team members Trust, the final piece of the puzzle, is crucial for operational bliss. ✨ TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK ✨ A successful weekend spent in Fareham at a mixed hockey tournament, even managed to come away with some silverware🏆(and an Oasis Ticket!!). Winning is always good, but for me, success comes through a number of things. LEADERSHIP OVER BOSSHIP In my early days as a naive Sales person, I had the opportunity of working under different types of supervisors with parallel management skills. (Mark my choice of words) Despite of their divergent allegiance to people management strategies, they all had one thing in common - to meet targets and get commission. Some never cared about what their junior went through, instead of being an enabler, they would cripple you to achieve their KPI's emotionally and physically. One made me walk for over 10Km in a single day after a successful sale which I ensured that delivery of the products were done and in perfect condition. My supervisor stopped picking up my calls as I called for transport support. It was getting late so I had to walk back home for over 10Km that fateful day. I sweared to be a better supervisor that day. I promised myself never to revenge innocent lives that God and life would bring under my Leadership. Thankfully over the years I have had an opportunity of leading teams at different operational level and I have lived up to that promise. Sometimes, I went overboard to keep my team happier than I was treated (something I have reduced after having a family-wife&kids). Any team I have ever led have constantly called me Papa, Daddy and Grandpa despite being in my mid 30s. A well motivated team is a good recipe for sustainable growth. Expect to meet your KPI's with a happy team, expect your team members to go an extra mile for you. Moreover, some of the two supervisors that tormented me collapsed after I left. My Happy Team have rescued my performance in torrid times and I gracious eat out with them once in a while. It's beyond numbers, we Lead humans with emotions. Took my hit squad out with my daughter. #SalesIsALifestyle

It's now been just over 1yr since returning to Home Bargains Leyland as SM, and it's been a rewarding 12 months.. As I enter the final few years of my career, heading into my 47th Xmas in retail, yes, I am hoping to get to at least 50, I look back with rose tinted glasses every now and again, but still love what I do. Having changed the team up on arrival where 4 out of 5 of us swapped within 3 weeks, we now have a very solid base in the shop...having promoted a TL to Deputy and bringing in a new TL, I am now in the position where I have grown my own, so to speak... In March of this year, we took a chance on an 18yr old part time colleague who I felt had what it takes and made them up to TL. My Team Leaders, Deputy amd I discussed the person in question, looked past her age and just at her..we all agreed on her becoming TL. She had got a job she didn't know she wanted, but because we have created a great environment to work, she suddenly found out wanted it...and she is doing so well. I love the people side of my job, and people underestimate how important it is to create a great place to work. 12 months in, I have prepared a team with a broad spectrum of skills and experience who can all step up and run the shop very well when I'm not in, a team that has 44 years between it's youngest and oldest member (me unfortunately), a team where there is a succession plan in place for me leaving, Deputy to SM, TL to Deputy, colleague to TL, resulting in 2 part times 16year olds replacing me on the fill shift. They all know their role in that. And yes, my Area Manager has been told of my plans...my team deserve that. Alongside us is a team of fantastic colleagues who help us deliver green nearly every week on all KPIs , top of the Area for LFL, most efficient store in terms of fill and till, 100% fully trained, best control on labour, 0 complaints from customers, the list is endless. We just couldn't t do it without them... My job is to protect and nurture, coach and challenge and grow talent. And that we are doing..we have our next 2 Team Leaders lined up, and 5 Step up colleagues fighting for the next key colleague role, Team Leader in waiting. My team in our little shop are the best group of individuals working as one Ive had in a long while, and today I would like to thank each and everyone one of them... Two of the most ridiculous sayings ever? “I am happy with what I have got” and “I am happy where I am” Of course you are otherwise you would change and move! However what if you suddenly became unhappy with what you have or unhappy where you are? What is your plan B? If you are currently a Manager with a team and could have the lowest premiums and a monthly retainer (not subject to clawback) so that approximately 75% of your earnings would never be subject to clawback, surely that would be worth meeting for a cup of coffee The industry is changing. Loaded premiums thankfully should be come a thing of the past very soon. What is your plan B Joining a start up is wonderful maybe for the first year or maybe even two but once the cancellations start kicking in are those companies going to be able to meet their clawback commitments and continue to pay consultants Tavistock offer complete financial security in these uncertain times.
