"Reform the PhD system or close it down," by Mark C. Taylor argues that the PhD education system in the United States and other countries is outdated and unsustainable. It criticizes the oversupply of PhD graduates, who face limited job prospects, and the persistence of an academic model rooted in outdated traditions. Taylor suggests reducing the number of PhD programs, focusing on interdisciplinary and practical education, and encouraging collaboration between universities to better align with contemporary needs and job markets. The goal is to create a more effective and relevant doctoral education system. #Research #Phd #Mark C.Taylor #System

🚨 Is the PhD system outdated? Should it be reformed or shut down? 🚨 The current PhD model, rooted in the Middle Ages, continues to churn out over-specialized graduates with few job prospects. 🎓❌ In a world that’s rapidly changing, experts like Mark C. Taylor argue it’s time to rethink the PhD system—either reform it or close it down. Universities need to shift towards interdisciplinary programs and industry collaborations to better prepare students for today’s workforce. 🌍💼 Check out my latest article to explore how the PhD system can be reformed to stay relevant in the 21st century. 🔗 Read more: [https://lnkd.in/gwxBUQTp] #PhDReform #HigherEducation #AcademicChange #PhDLife #InterdisciplinaryLearning #EducationSystem #JobMarket #CareerOpportunities #InnovationInEducation #ilovephd

A typically wise, thoughtful reflection from my former (always?) colleague Sarah Mohammad-Qureshi. As with any journey we take, there are multiple possible destinations from a single starting point. Sarah reminds us - we have choices, and it's ok to choose what right for us. #ThankYou #CareerManagement #Choices #Researchers #PhDReflections

20 years since my PhD viva I was recently reminded that this summer marked 20 years since I achieved my PhD. In the multitasking chaos that I live my life 😂 , I also completed on the purchase of my first house later that afternoon, after my viva. In fact, not one to live life by conventionally paced timelines, this was also a month and a half before my wedding. My lab-based research career seems a world away now. One of the niggling thoughts which prevented me from moving on earlier was the belief that the investment into my doctoral studies would be for nothing if I didn’t stay on that path. I can confirm that isn’t true Statistically, not every successful postdoctoral research student will end their career as a seasoned academic. Realistically, not all want to. During my time as a Postdoctoral Researcher Development Officer, I would run ‘Alternative careers for researchers’ sessions with the aim to prepare our doctoral candidates in recognising the wealth of skills they develop across their PhD journey and where these can be applied. There are so many career paths beyond traditional academia, we need to bring out those stories and challenge the narrative that the traditional academic career path is the only acceptable route to success and the only career a PhD trains doctorates for. My current role uses critical investigation, data analysis, hypothesis proposal, experimental design and methodology (the list goes on), all skills I developed during my PhD and have engaged regardless of whether I was undertaking genetic engineering or creating an equality action plan. Good luck to everyone who is starting out or on their PhD journey – enjoy the process, you will look back on it fondly one day 😊 #PhD #Scientists #Researchers #Academia #ResearchCareers #Doctorate #PhDJourney #PersonalDevelopment #ProfessionalDevelopment

Share this to support a #PhD or a PhD student: A PhDs value isn't determined by external achievements or the pace at which we reach them. CVs are not the only things that matter. The PhD journey is fraught with challenges. From the pressure of publishing to the unpredictability of research outcomes, much is outside their control. It's easy to feel behind or inadequate. Find strength in practicing gratitude for their journey and in reminding themselves of their intrinsic worth. If you know a PhD, remind them that they are remarkable, not for their list of achievements, but for their resilience and dedication. Let's #changescience by shifting our focus from competition to fostering an environment of support and self-compassion.

Why study for a PhD? On social media, discussions around pursuing a doctorate are often filled with individual experiences. Yet, amid conflicting narratives, the question remains - what drives one to embark on this journey? Education is a common aspiration, but the road to a PhD is a challenging one. The process tests our resolve, questioning the very essence of our initial purpose. #PhD #Doctorate #Education #Journey #Purpose

Elena's graphic sums up what's going through my head when I see researchers being told how to broadly disseminate their work, DIY style. On one hand they're intrinsic learners. They're resourceful. They often function, as someone says in the comments, like a "one-person startup." So they can quickly learn how to be expert, strategic communicators. But at what point is it unfair to hand them even more responsibilities? Should researchers really be expected to also be professional social media strategists, media-relations consultants--their own PR shop?
