Candidate: Start Writing Mysteries! with Carol Oliver and Will Estes So you think you'd like to write a mystery, but it seems overwhelming? Join us to examine the essential elements of a murder mystery: a setting, a sleuth, a murder victim, the murder method, a cast of suspects, the cast who assist the sleuth in investigating and solving the murder, as well as lists of actual clues and red herrings to plant in the story. We'll also discuss how the genre conventions affect your development of general fiction elements (e.g., plot, character, pacing). Brainstorm, refine rough ideas into workable ones, and get help starting on your story-specific research. Leave class with a semi-plan: not an outline, but a collection of notes you can use to write a complete first draft in whatever writing style you prefer. CANDIDATE: Vote by March1 to see it run! Tuesday/Friday at 8 pm ET beginning April 2 https://ow.ly/vfyg50QAvBA

Breaking writers block - a breakthrough & working concepts ‘If it sounds like writing, I rewrite it. Or, if proper usage gets in the way, it may have to go. I can’t allow what we learned in English composition to disrupt the sound and rhythm of the narrative.’ - Elmore Leonard My writers block was not going to resolve itself. I needed to find the fastest way to break through the wall and get the first words on a page. I am completely out of my comfort zone. And really, I am still not certain that I won’t re-frame it to turn this into a more behavioural science piece rather than a piece of fiction. I decided to use a logline approach that generally screenwriters use as what I would describe as a kind of pitch. There were a few methods I used to get the words out of my head. The first was to get it on paper succinctly. Write the concept in ten words or less. As you can see, I didn’t quite get them both under 10 words. However, the purpose of this was to break my writers block and I am sharing my very first thoughts unedited. These will be refined and defined over time. ‘Lost in the Capital, the lines of reality are blurred.’ ‘What happens when there is no security for a global Defence consultant?’ #amwriting #writersblock #writerslife #draft #fiction #selfcare #joiedevivre #houseofwallace

When it comes to writing, we often face a difficult choice. Should you opt for a word or phrase that sounds natural but may be considered grammatically incorrect or do you go with a second option that most consider correct but sounds awkward? In most instances, the answer is to find an often-elusive third option; one with broad appeal (basically, usage choices that sound natural and pass grammatical muster). To simplify your search, Senior Editor Roger Siebert has compiled a list of natural sounding, grammatically correct usage choices in his newest Grammar Tip.
