What was your first opinion of me? Be gentle. We're all told not to judge others too quickly but we all do it - and it's called thin slicing. It's a concept in psychology that refers to the ability to find patterns in events based only on "thin slices," or in other words, small amounts of information. Over time, it's enabled us to make accurate judgements about others or situations with only limited exposure—often just a few seconds or minutes - often to keep us alive! Yet that same process works when we are meeting people or in situations that don't present any risk of death! Think about how quickly you can form an opinion about someone, and usually not a good one. It might be right, but what if it's not. The way I see it is that our social wiring has evolved to keep us safe but is always needs to adapt to our ever-evolving environment. After all, evolution doesn't run at the same speed as the progress humanity has made over the past 100 years. So, by all means, listen to your gut when it flags a warning, but remember that it very well might not be positively serving you. Can you think of a time when you've had your initial perception proved wrong? #ProfessionalDevelopment #CriticalThinking #LeadershipSkills #EmotionalIntelligence #PeopleSkills #CareerGrowth #PersonalBranding #WorkplacePsychology #SelfAwareness #ProfessionalGrowth

Yes. I can remember when I noticed a new recruit in the restaurant and felt he didn’t really have it. I was so wrong he turned out to be one of the best team members we ever had.
