I had an incredible live session with Principal Curtis F. L. on Hiring Staff Who Build Culture, Not Just Teach. We dug deep into what it takes to bring in people who do more than deliver content—they shape the heart of your school! Principal Lawrence dropped some gems 💎 about what to look for in a candidate, and it’s more than just credentials: 📝 Check their extracurriculars: What do they do outside of teaching? Look for activities that show they’re community-focused. Whether it's coaching, running a chess club, or being involved in sports, these are indicators they’ll bring value beyond the classroom walls. 👂 Listen to their beliefs about students: The most important part of any interview? Hearing what they truly believe about what students can achieve. Are they growth-oriented? Do they have high expectations? This speaks volumes about how they’ll impact your school culture. It’s not just about filling a position—it’s about building a community. "I’ve written code for McGraw Hill for most of my professional career, having first pursued this career with the ALEKS platform before the company acquired it in 2013. I think most people would be surprised that my undergraduate major was in science. Coding was part of my undergrad requirements, and I enjoyed it, so I decided to explore my career options within the industry. At the time, the dot com era was taking off and no one knew the possibilities of the internet. In the beginning, the industry was male-dominated, which for some could be daunting, but it was something I was used to given my science background. But that’s not really the case anymore. If you speak to women today, they’re inspired by the opportunity to pursue a career in Computer Science, and eager to support one another in this industry – and the same goes for men. It’s an industry that welcomes representation for all. One of the most rewarding parts of my job is the feedback we receive from our customers. Just recently, we received a note about a student struggling in math, but with the help of our product, they’ve seen a dramatic improvement in their performance. As a technical lead, all of my work is behind the scenes and I don’t get the opportunity to meet the students who use our products, but knowing I've helped a student succeed and gain confidence in a subject area is gratifying. To do this work alongside such an incredible team makes it even more wonderful." #WomensHistoryMonth #Inspireinclusion #RedCubeProud

Imagine you could take one teacher and split them into two, with one focused on delivering the curriculum and the other focused on differentiation and student development... Our unique co-teaching model in the elementary grades does just that. The collaboration between Subject Expert Teachers (SETs) and Learning Expert Teachers (LETs) create a classroom experience that enhances outcomes for students and teachers. While the SETs deliver subject specific, content-rich lessons, the LET is able to focus on differentiation, interventions, and connecting all of the subjects together to ensure every student is learning to the best of their ability. Learn more about the benefits of this model here: https://lnkd.in/gZwfAvWG Interested in being a founding LET at our new campus in Bothell, WA? The FEWSION team at Northern Arizona University in beautiful Flagstaff, Arizona is (as usual) hiring! A research software engineering position #607879 is now open through 6/17/2024; apply through the NAU Careers webpage. This position will support all of our data science and supply chain resilience projects, but is especially focused on WATER and ECOLOGY tasks funded under the Global Ecosystem Research Infrastructure (GERI) initiative and also a US Geological Survey project to link US water users to the water natural capital accounts that support their usage using a water tower framework. Applications are sought at all ranks and from a wide diversity of backgrounds. We are interested in both junior and senior applicants, and in both "data scientists", as well as "research programmers". There is an important scientific component to this position, so Ph.D.'s should also consider applying, e.g. instead of taking a Postdoc. Inquiries should be directed to Ben Ruddell at benjamin.ruddell@nau.edu. https://fewsion.us https://csil.rc.nau.edu/ https://lnkd.in/gpQSzRRi https://lnkd.in/gFmdyCnp #FEWSION #NAU #datascience #research #hiring #supplychain #water #GERI #ecology #NEON #USGS #naturalcapitalaccounts #waterdata

Key Insights to Landing Your First Tech Job Ever felt like you were diving into the deep end without knowing how to swim? That was me entering the tech world with zero technical background. ____________________________________ Here's my story: As a requirement for my undergraduate degree at University of Benin, I had to undergo a six-month industrial placement called SIWES. Luckily, I ended up at Swifta Systems and it was a pivotal moment in my career. My time at Swifta Systems wasn't just a stopover; it was an eye-opener. Surrounded by top-tier engineers, I was pushed way out of my comfort zone and I got to experience the day-to-day activities of a software engineer. But they say growth happens outside comfort zones, right? And boy, did I grow! ____________________________________________ 🔑Invaluable lessons securing my first tech role taught me: 1. Make Friends: Building meaningful connections in the tech community, goes beyond sending a connection request, have a conversation! 2. Build projects: Each project serves as tangible proof of your capabilities and allows you to showcase your thought process and creativity. 3. Open Source Contributions: Contributing to open-source projects provides hands-on experience and builds your collaborative skills which is essential for success in the industry. It's a rewarding way to make meaningful contributions while honing one's expertise. 4. Volunteer Work: Volunteering your time and skills to various tech initiatives not only enriches your experience but also demonstrates your commitment to learning and growth within the field. ____________________________________________ 🌟 Final Thoughts: Transitioning into a tech career requires perseverance, dedication, and a willingness to embrace new challenges. So, to all the non-techies out there dreaming of breaking into the industry—just go for it! #TechCareer #Opportunity #Networking #OpenSource #VolunteerWork #LinkedInTechCommunity 💼🌐✨

For 14 years, I dreamed of building a career in tech. Yes, a career in tech has been my number one aspiration. Join me as I share my journey, the challenges I've faced, and my determination to achieve this dream. I'm Amidat Marvis Lawal, a graduate of Mathematics and Computer Science from the Federal University of Technology Minna, Class of 2010. My first degree does sound really 'techy' but I quickly realised that being a math/comp science graduate was mostly just a title. About 90% of what I learned was theoretical, with very little practical application. I still remember when we were introduced to Visual Basic in final year. It was a struggle to grasp, especially since it was meant for our final project. Mathematics dominated our coursework, filled with complex topics like Lebesgue integrals and calculus - of course I'm a show-off😁- it all felt like jargon to me at the time. My first degree didn’t meet my expectations, but everyone assumed I was an expert when they hear what I studied. I totally can't blame them, if only they knew this girl was still on the ASDF line on Marvis Beacon. Fast forward to 2010. As planned, I got married a month after my last semester at the university in March 2011, and later that year, I had my first child. Emphasis on 'first', more kids came as the years passed and my tech dream took a back seat. Fast forward to now. This is me taking steps towards my dreams, I'm doing it afraid, but I'm doing it regardless Come along as I work toward landing my first role in tech. To be continued... . . . . . . . . #WomenInTech #MyTechJourney #TechAspirations #CareerGrowth #FromDreamToReality #BreakingBarriers #CareerInTech #TechJourney #WomenInTech #TechDreams #CareerGoals #TechAspirations #STEM #TechCommunity #TechLife #Inspiration #NeverGiveUp #FirstTechJob #TechCareer #Motivation #DreamBig
