Brazil has been hit with #climate tragedies several times in the last year. The historic drought in the Amazon, the massive heatwave in Rio (which claimed the life of a Taylor Swift fan), and now these devastating floods in the southern state of Rio Grande de Sul. These "once in a lifetime" events are happening around the world with increased frequency and intensity. And, while natural disasters impact both the global North and South, the impacts are more severe for already vulnerable populations. The pictures and statistics from the recent floods in Brazil are heartbreaking. In Porto Alegre, a city with a population roughly the size of Manhattan, 150,000 people have been displaced from their homes. ---> 80% of residents report no access to running water. Hundreds of towns in the surrounding areas are underwater. The international airport will be closed through the end of the month. The road to recovery will be long and fraught with challenges. Felipe Villela, one of LinkedIn's loudest voices for #regenerativeagriculture, #nature, and #biodiversity, is from Southern Brazil and has been sharing his perspective on this event. If you're able to donate to relief efforts, he's shared information from a reputable organization here: https://lnkd.in/g8-CaGxQ * #climatecrisis #Brazil https://lnkd.in/gyBqyWQr

We all know when it is monsoon it is going to rain heavily and floods may happen Nature will give birth to fresh vegetation and also nature doesn’t know is it good or bad! In planet earth nature is permanent unlike humans. So we all should prepare for it and make necessary changes into the lifestyle especially those who are living in the river or coastal areas Since we have overcome of Covid, I think planning precautionary measures for next year monsoon by this year only we can save lives and nature. Every year merely announcing relief funds is not going to help us to beat this kind of natural calamities for humans! Actually it’s not natural disasters. It’s Natures rejuvenation. We all should accept and help nature to get rejuvenation by not at the cost of humans lives. #floods #nature

Empty soil vs forested soil You can see the impact 🌴 We have all seen heart-rendering scenes in Europe and around the world, as flooding occurs. The solution to flooding has been known for many years, evidenced here so simply. Sure, flooding happens. BUT, it doesn't have to devastate our cities and communities. My heart goes out to communities who have been affected in recent months. Let's push our politicians to act and restore nature in and near our cities. #regeneration #flooding #restorenature #natureconservation

Over the years, I've had casual conversations with SO many people about this phenomenon... Compacted soil allows water to quickly run off (like we see in empty lots and dry, dusty fields, or EVEN WORSE, paved and concrete surfaces). Forested / planted soil acts as a sponge to absorb and retain water. If we want to cut back on flooding, we should double down on plants and trees, especially near coastal areas. This video is a great demo of the concept. 🌎

Spain has experienced catastrophic flooding due to unprecedented rainfall, particularly affecting the Valencia region. The rainfall recorded was staggering, with some areas receiving over 300 liters per square meter in just 24 hours, and Chiva reporting nearly 500 liters in eight hours. This deluge has resulted in at least 205 fatalities, marking it as the deadliest natural disaster in Spain's modern history. In light of the devastating floods currently affecting Spain, we want to extend our heartfelt wishes for safety and resilience to all our customers in the region. We stand with you during this difficult period and are here to support you in any way we can. Please take care of yourselves and each other. Our thoughts are with you as you work towards recovery from this disaster. #Gosoled #SpainFlood #ValenciaStrong #StaySafeSpain #SolidarityWithSpain #FloodRelief #PrayForSpain #SupportSpain #ResilienceInAdversity #TogetherForSpain

Great example to demonstrate the important of tree canopy. Tree canopy is very crucial to help soil water enough. It prevents ran-off and erosion which occurs when rain directly fall through soil without being stopped with any barriers. As the rain would hit the ground in a very high speed. Studies show that heavy rainfall can splash substantial amounts of soil—up to 90 tons per acre—resulting in both surface runoff and sediment loss. This is particularly pronounced in areas with degraded crop residue cover or bare soils, where the lack of protective vegetation allows for more significant erosion. For that reason, tree canopy would minimize those potential impact by intercepting rain using their parts such as leaves and branches. These will, allow it to evaporate before it reaches the ground. This interception will significantly reduces the volume of water that directly impacts the soil, thereby minimizing soil erosion and compaction. Studies indicate that tree canopies can intercept a significant portion of rainfall—up to 29% in some forested area.
